Firstly a big thank you to Maureen and Alan for hosting the annual TT comp at their place on Saturday 4 March. Great fellowship and interestingly, the competition was very even. Most members behaved themselves but the winning team of Barry Dunstan and Kate Noakes were unstoppable from the off. Barry shocked us all with a level of determination matched only by his determination to finish the BBQ shelter. Well done Barry and Kate. (see photos)
And oh my, we cannot win a trick with the weather and selling raffle tickets. After blistering heat and storms ruling our earlier K-Mart dates, last Wednesday delivered a Polar blast, so Di H and Roger both froze their extremities off, while potential customers scooted by with little enthusiasm for raffle tickets. Top marks for perseverance you two.
Monday 6th was well attended to enjoy a very engaging presentation from Lisa Gooding and Rhonda Hastie of Energy Australia. They outlined the process for transition away from brown Coal generation at Yallourn W in 2028. The challenges of mine remediation were explained very visually, using Di Harrison’s head as an example of Overburden! Visuals which will be hard to forget and which will help us understand the challenges they face.
I was invited to present the history of Rotary and our club’s role as a community organisation to the Grade 5’s and 6’s at Albert Street Primary School. Needless to say we had a few laughs along the way as we took a “Time machine” back to Chicago 1905 and designed the value system of a community group. Their suggestions bore a close resemblance to our 4 way test. I was also able to present the RJCA program to 8 students who are in the 2023 program.
As we are NOT having a formal meeting this weekend and there was mixed enthusiasm for a picnic out somewhere, Kate and I are offering an invite to a BBQ at our home, 190 McDonalds Track, 6 for 6:30pm.
BYO everything. We can hopefully enjoy a pleasant evening just socialising, and perhaps a couple of easy but ridiculous games, suited to all ages. All I ask is that you let me know please, preferably before Monday

International Women's Day 2023 campaign theme: #EmbraceEquity
International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March. This year’s theme is #Embrace Equity. Equity isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have if we are to address disadvantage and discrimination and provide equal and fair opportunities to enable everyone to live their best life.
There are many forms of disadvantage and discrimination in the world, a lot of which has been directed at women. We know that women were once seen as belonging to their husbands and having no rights as individuals – and unfortunately this still happens in some parts of the world. We know that girls (and boys) and women have been denied opportunities to participate in education and employment - and still are in some parts of the world. This has resulted in a stifling of development and maintained intergenerational disadvantage. While much has been done to address these and many other issues around the world, there is still much more to be done.
In doing so, it’s vital to understand the difference between equity and equality. Equality basically means that equal resources are provided to everyone, regardless of need. In contrast, Equity relates to the distribution of resources in a way that addresses different circumstances to ensure that needs are met and to help achieve fair and equal outcomes.
The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.
So, in celebrating IWD 2023, I would encourage everyone to #Embrace Equity. In so doing, I would also like to extend a challenge to everyone not to simply take the popular view or a narrow focus on addressing inequity. There are many, many forms of discrimination and disadvantage that are hidden from view and it’s important that we not only acknowledge that, but that we also take positive action to address each and every one of these situations.
I am writing in response to your email received 7 February 2023 seeking support form Latrobe city Council for the Rotary Club of Moe’s major fundraising event being on 27 March 2023.
It is inspiring to see organisations such as yours putting together events that not only foster community spirit but also contribute back into services offered to support our local community members.
Latrobe Leisure will contribute to the prizes by offering a 3 and 12-month gold membership, along with several free Leisure facility passes with the total of the prizes valued at over $1500.00. We trust these will encourage people to continue their participation in physically activity and provide further opportunity for social interactions and connections which can help improve mental health and wellbeing.
I can not personally attend the event however I wish you all the best with your planning and know the event will be a great success. I hope that the funds raised from this event will help you to continue your important work in the community supporting local initiatives.
A member of the Latrobe Leisure team will be in contact shortly to arrange delivery of the prizes and information about services provided by the facilities to share with your participants on the day.
Despite all of the concerns about our ability to make a real go of this year's Rotary Golf Classic, I'm particularly pleased with developments. Administratively, our organisation has been first class, and for that I thank Maureen and Barry in particular.
Communication with players and sponsors in a quick and decisive manner has been evident throughout. Likewise, as soon as Barry is hit with a request for invoices or advice it is immediately provided.
Overall, the committee has operated like a well-oiled machine. Well done.
Most of our donations have now been collected and although down on vouchers compared to previous years, we will certainly have a solid auction. Teams are currently sitting at 24, but 30+ is not out of the question.
This week we will establish an auction list and determine whether a mini raffle is viable.
In addition we plan to finalise the manpower roles for the day and distribute this list to club members.
Finally, in my absence at the club meeting on 20th March, the golf day update will be provided by our committee members.
