Di's Dialogue #75

This week I have been overwhelmed by the terrible invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. I feel deeply for the Ukrainian people and the disruption caused by the outbreak of war in their homeland.
Apparently, Rotary is represented by fifty-two clubs in different cities of Ukraine and has almost 1000 members. There are nine clubs in Kyiv, with the Rotary Club Kyiv International officially chartered on 27 December 2019, with an inaugural membership of thirty people.

Rotary International has published a statement on the conflict in Ukraine, https://my.rotary.org/en/statement-rotary-international-ukraine/
For brevity, I have included a couple of key points made in the statement.
‘…We are deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Ukraine and the escalating loss of life and humanitarian hardship there.

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organisations, we have made peace the cornerstone of our global mission.
We join the international community in calling for an immediate cease fire, withdrawal of Russian forces, and restoration of diplomatic efforts to resolve this conflict through dialogue.

Our thoughts are with our fellow Rotary members and others in Ukraine coping with these tragic events...’ (Rotary International, 25 February 2022).

Turning to our own club meeting, this week will be the 4th Monday of the month and is Club Assembly night.
The meeting be offered as a hybrid meeting, and I thank PE Robin Noakes for arranging virtual access for members. A Zoom link will be sent to all members sometime over the weekend. If you wish to attend in person, arrive at the Moe RSL at 6.00pm for 6.30pm start. Reminder: if you are not a member of the RSL, you will be requested to show your Victorian Driver’s Licence by staff. The Zoom meeting component will finish at 7.15pm and the face-to-face meeting, at 7.45pm.

During our Club Assembly, reports from our Secretary, Maureen Bishop; Treasurer, Diane Wilkinson; and Committee Chairs, Alan Bishop, (Community); Robin Noakes, (Youth/Vocational); and Diane Wilkinson, (International/Foundation), will be provided to members.

Rog Taylor, Chair of the Golf Committee, will also share an update of how things are progressing with our major fundraising event. By the way, welcome back Rog! I hope you are feeling refreshed after a couple of weeks touring beautiful Tasmania!

Thanks again to Bill Connell for your coordination of the raffle and ticket sales. An update from Bill will also be provided at our Club Assembly on Monday night.
Please warmly welcome a visitor to our club meeting. Victor Bennett has recently moved to Moe and is keen to meet local Rotarians. Thank you, Helen MacDonald, for encouraging Victor to come along to a Rotary meeting.

Lastly, to our members, thank you for your ongoing contributions to our club. I appreciate the many and varied ways Moe Rotarians support our club and who care about each other, their community, and humanity in general.

Rotary Area of Focus - February

Promoting peace

There are millions of people across the world today who are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution and human rights violations.  Half of them are children.
As a humanitarian organisation, peace is a cornerstone of Rotary’s mission.  Rotary believes that when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.
Rotary encourages conversations to foster understanding within and across cultures. Rotary trains adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.  By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, Rotarians can take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Rotary’s commitment to peacebuilding faces new challenges today including achieving lasting change.  To answer this challenge, Rotary is looking to approach the concept of peace with greater cohesion and inclusivity and finding more ways to get people involved.
Rotary’s Four Roles in Promoting Peace are:
  1. Practitioners:  Working to fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, improve the health of mothers and children, support education, and growing local economies directly helps to build improved conditions for peaceful societies.
  2. Educators:  Rotary Peace Centres have trained over 1,300 peace fellows to become effective catalysts for peace through careers in government, education and international organisations.
  3. Mediators:  Rotary members have negotiated humanitarian ceasefires in areas of conflict to allow polio vaccinators to reach children who are at risk.
  4. Advocates: Rotary members play an integral role as respected, impartial participants during peace processes and in post-conflict reconstruction.  Rotary focuses on creating communities and convening groups that are connected, inclusive, and resilient.

International Mother Language Day – 21 February

Background
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999. The UN General Assembly welcomed the proclamation of the day in its resolution of 2002.
It is widely recognised today that languages play a vital role in many ways, including:
  • in development,
  • in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue,
  • in strengthening co-operation and attaining quality education for all,
  • in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage, and
  • in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development.

International Mother Language Day also recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.

International Mother Language Day 2022

The theme of the 2022 International Mother Language Day is “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and Opportunities”, which raises the potential role of technology to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all. Technology has the potential to accelerate efforts towards ensuring equitable and inclusive lifelong learning opportunities for all if it is guided by the core principles of inclusion and equity.

During school closures due to COVID-19, many schools around the world utilised technology-based solutions to maintain continuity of learning.  However, many learners lacked the necessary equipment, internet access, suitable materials, language diversity and content to enable them to fully participate in distance learning.

Language diversity, with its complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development is extremely important.  However, globalization can threaten the ongoing use of diverse languages, which can impact on the traditions, memory, unique modes of thinking and expresses intertwined in cultural diversity.

International Mother Language Day is observed to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.  The International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) aims to ensure Indigenous peoples’ right to preserve, revitalize and promote their languages, through opportunities to collaborate in areas of policy development and developing initiatives for the use, preservation, revitalization and promotion of indigenous languages around the world.
