Di's Dialogue # 42

We are back in Zoomland!!

Due to state government restrictions placed on numbers of people who can gather socially indoors at a venue being limited to 10, the Vocational Business Excellence Awards, scheduled for Monday night, have been cancelled.

That leaves us with an opportunity to meet, virtually!

I have had discussions with key people in our club and we will go ahead and run short Zoom meetings for the next two weeks and adjust our meeting format according to changes in social restrictions.

Monday night's meeting will start at 6.30pm and run for 45 mins. (Come share "My first paid job was..")

Len Cairns will be the Zoom Moderator and I will host the meeting. See below for the link

See you all on Monday night at 6.30pm!

Renewing Working with Children card
As I mentioned at the Club Assembly Meeting of 24th May, 2021, the Victorian Department of Justice is advising holders of the Working With Children Card when their card is about to expire. In order for the process to be a simple as possible, I have set out below the steps you should take if you currently hold a card and wish to renew it.

(Remember if we, as Rotarians do not have this card we are not covered by Rotary Insurance and should not work with children in a Rotary capacity).

Step 1: Check the expiry date on your card. If it is soon, you can renew online easily with no issues if your information is the same (see personal email sent out on 26 May 2021)

It takes only a couple minutes and is simple to follow. You will need to have your card number handy.

(You can renew online from 6 months before expiry to 3 months after expiry, quite a wide window). However, once expired, you cannot legally work with children, unless you have lodged a renewal.

Step 2: Once you renew and get your new valid card you will need to photo copy it and fill in Form 4 (see earlier email). Form 4 is a District 9820 requirement that affirms that nothing has changed since your original submission of Form 3 with the three referee statements. You do not need to redo Form 3 and seek referees.

Step 3: Once you have filled in Form 4 with the photo of your new WWC card please send this to me for our records and I notify District that you have complied and as club CPO I keep a file of the paperwork. (Len.Cairns44@Yahoo.com).

Hope to hear from you soon.

RI President 2021-22

Shekhar Mehta, of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, is the for President of Rotary International for 2021-22.

Mehta acknowledges that current membership trends are a challenge and says that membership development should be Rotary’s highest priority. He believes that focusing on regional plans, successfully transitioning Rotaractors into Rotary clubs, and increasing diversity and female members could yield a 5 percent net growth in membership each year.

“A major brainstorming is needed to find effective solutions suited to different areas of the world,” says Mehta. He adds that regional ethos and culture have to be taken into account to find localized solutions, as “one size does not fit all.” He believes Rotary can extend to new geographical areas and countries.

As a strong proponent of Rotary’s strategic plan, Mehta says he will encourage clubs to use action plans and reinforce the core values of Rotary.

Mehta says Rotary needs to become more contemporary and adaptable by focusing on partnerships with governments and corporations, expanding partnerships with organizations that specialize in Rotary’s areas of focus, and investing in technology.

Mehta, an accountant, is chair of the Skyline Group, a real estate development company he founded. He is also a director of Operation Eyesight Universal (India), a Canada-based organization.

Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trustee of ShelterBox, UK. After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he helped build nearly 500 homes for families affected by the disaster.

Mehta pioneered a program that has performed more than 1,500 life-changing heart surgeries in South Asia. He is also the architect of the TEACH Program, which promotes literacy throughout India and has reached thousands of schools.

A Rotary member since 1984, Mehta has served Rotary as director, member or chair of several committees, zone coordinator, training leader, member of The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers, and district governor. He is also the chair of Rotary Foundation (India).

Mehta has received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Awards.

He and his wife, Rashi, are Major Donors and members of the Bequest Society.
