Di's Dialogue # 37

Another beautiful spring day to enjoy and I hope wherever you are, you are able to experience the warmth of the sun.

Club Assembly on Monday night was busy. We welcomed Jamie Hunt to our meeting for his first visit. Thank you to John Hutchinson for inviting Jamie along and introducing him to many Rotarians. Hopefully John has organised to take Jamie along to the International Foundation Fireside meeting on Monday. Chairs of the Community Service (Bill Connell)  and International Foundation (Diane Wilkinson) committees will send out an agenda and advise of the meeting venue.

Many thanks to Bryce Eishold for his work in organising the Vocational Business Excellence Awards. He is doing a good job in his role as acting Chair and is being well-supported by fellow committee members. As they have all been working hard, and everything is under control, they will have Monday night off!

Another hardworking Rotarian is Diane Wilkinson. Thank you for following-up with the updated Club By-Laws. The By-Laws were officially adopted by club members present at our Monday night meeting.

Thank you to Len Cairns for his behind the scenes work in promoting the Youth Mental Health First Aid course. I have written a post on our Facebook page. Please share the post amongst your networks. The dates are Sunday 16 & Sunday 30 May from 9.00am -4.30pm at the Moe Hotel. Click on the link in the post to register. The course is aimed at people who work with youth. It is not a counselling or therapy session.

Mike Ainswerth, President of Rotary Club of Morwell has invited Moe Rotarians to participate in a social BBQ at Lake Kernot in Morwell on Sunday 16 May. The idea is to raise money for RAMs (Rotarians Against Malaria) and take part in a leisurely stroll around the lake followed by a BBQ lunch. Rotarians from Traralgon Central have also been invited. Meeting time at the lake will be 11.00am. If you are interested, please let me know and I will confirm numbers with Mike.

Lastly, I'd like to thank our amazing secretary, Maureen Bishop for all her hard work and diligence. She really is a dynamo and I so appreciate everything Maureen does as she makes my job so much easier!

See you all at our 'Themed Meeting' in two weeks (10 May). I believe Rog Taylor will be organising the evening and we will be reviewing the Golf Day. It was to be held at Mia's but that venue is no longer available.

A closing quote:

RAM

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) Australia consists of volunteers who are passionate about eliminating malaria in partner countries. RAM is an Australian registered charity, and is part of the "Rotary Australia World Community Service".

Malaria has killed and debilitated humans since history began. There have been significant reductions in the incidence of both disease and death over recent years, with a halving of cases and deaths since 2000. However, Malaria remains a disease that causes over 400,000 fatalities every year—many of them among small children—and imposes a heavy burden on the health and wellbeing of some 229 million people. The heaviest toll caused by Malaria is among poorer communities, mostly in Africa and in other tropical regions. Malaria reflects the health inequality between developed and developing countries.

Among Australia’s neighbours, Malaria has almost been eliminated in Timor Leste and Vanuatu is aiming for elimination in the next few years. The disease remains a significant problem in Papua New Guinea, Eastern Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands.

RAM supports projects that aim to control and ultimately eliminate Malaria. RAM works with government health programs in partner countries, and follows the recommended World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines on the best strategies for control and elimination. Most of the projects supported are in the area of vector control, i.e. reducing the mosquito population and the opportunity for mosquitos to bite humans and thus spread the Malaria parasite. The main RAM expenditures are for the provision and distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLINs); Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS); and environmental improvements such as through the Healthy Villages project. RAM also trains community health volunteers to participate in mass LLINs distribution and Malaria education.

RAM is managed by a network of Rotarians with a RAM representative in each of the 19 Rotary districts in Australia. RAM Australia volunteers develop and manage projects, and administer funds. Through the facilities provided by RAWCS Ltd, RAM has facilitated opportunities for Rotarians and Rotaractors, especially those with expertise in medical science and project governance, to visit the in-country programs. RAM provides information and resources on the latest research and development in malaria elimination.

For more information, check out the “Country Programs” tab and the Ram quarterly Newsletter located on the menu tab on the website https://ram.rawcs.com.au/ Fundraising for RAM comes through donations from individuals, Rotary Clubs, and Rotary International and from other public health funders such as the Global Fund.

All donations are always welcome.
