The Tokyo Olympic Games have begun! During lockdown, sport provides a focus of interest for many people and that was certainly the case in our house last night. First the footy then the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Tokyo. Although slow moving at first, the occasion gradually gathered momentum. Highlights were the lighting of the cauldron with the Olympic flame, seeing our flag bearers, Paddy Mills and Cate Campbell, leading our Australian team into the arena, and the amazing drone formation above the stadium.
Closer to home, three states are in lockdown. For those of us with family in NSW, we know how they feel and the despair about a possible longterm lockdown will be overwhelming for many people. For Victorians, I am hoping our lockdown will be over soon.
So, for Moe Rotarians, that means we will be zooming together again for at least the next two Mondays…
As Robin Noakes is still travelling through the WA outback, I will oversee Zoom and will send out a Zoom link Sunday evening. Our new Sargent-at-Arms, Barry Dunstan will host the meeting on Monday night. Sincere thanks to Rog Taylor for organising the program at short notice.
A group trivia will be part of the program, so please participate and find a trivia question that has three answers, with one being the correct answer. Further information about the program is included in this bulletin.
Lastly, an update regarding the preferred venue for club meetings. Thank you to everyone who participated, and I was really pleased that 26 out of 28 active club members voted. Overall, 4 members were happy to meet at either venue; 2 preferred the Moe Hotel; but the Moe RSL was the clear winner with 20 votes. Secretary Maureen will contact the RSL and confirm future bookings. Nonetheless, we do need to acknowledge the support of the Moe Hotel as a meeting venue from early February through to the end of June. How we do this will be discussed with our Program Chair, Rog Taylor.
Enjoy the weekend. Stay safe and I will, hopefully, see you all in Zoomland on Monday night!
The Rotary Area of Focus theme for October is Building Local Economies through economic and community development. Rotary works locally and globally in many ways to alleviate poverty and to strengthen communities and individuals, particularly in developing countries.
Worldwide, there are nearly 800 million people living on less than $1.90 per day. Rotary members are passionate about finding sustainable solutions to address local circumstances and use a multifaceted and coordinated strategy to implement service projects that provide opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. Rotary also helps to strengthen local entrepreneurs and leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.
Some of Rotary’s global initiatives in developing countries include:
Providing microloans to enable people to establish small businesses, including rickshaw drivers, street vendors or tailors, or to assist farmers to buy livestock or plant crops.
Providing farmers with skills and knowledge needed to address issues of soil erosion and improve soil fertility to improve crop yields and then successfully market their produce.
Enabling women to complete financial literacy courses and funding skills development and business training for other community members.
At a local level, the Rotary Club of Moe participates in a range of activities that help to build social capital in our community and to acknowledge and support businesses. We partner with other community groups and organisations to participate in local events including the annual Bonfire night and Carols by Candlelight, both of which create opportunities to strengthen community connections. We award Business Excellence Awards and also invite business owners to address the Club to provide more understanding about the issues that impact their operations. The Club has also worked closely with the Latrobe City to develop a wonderful new adventure playground at the Moe Botanic Gardens, another opportunity to bring community members together.
We undertake various fund-raising activities throughout the year that enable us to provide financial support to essential local services, including the Latrobe Regional Hospital and Gippsland Rotary Centenary House. Big or small, local or global, the Rotary Club of Moe recognises the vital importance of strong local economies and resilient communities to create a positive future for all.

Don McQueen, multi award winning Bush Balladeer delivers Australian poetry with exceptional passion and flair. Don performs regularly at a variety of events and now he's lending his talents to help raise some money to assist the Rotary Nomads in supporting excellent community projects. This event will be a Facebook Live show, you can watch it on the "Don McQueen The Bush Balladeer" Facebook Page, on October 14 at 8pm (NSW, VIC, TAS)

Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralysing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.
For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide and there are now only 2 countries continuing to report wild polio cases. Our Polio Plus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by vaccinating children on a massive scale. As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building. More than 1 million Rotary members have donated their time and money to eradicate polio, and every year, hundreds of members work with health workers to vaccinate children in countries affected by polio.
Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralysing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have also played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
No child should suffer from this vaccine-preventable disease. Because of the efforts of Rotary and its partners, nearly 19 million people who would otherwise have been paralysed are walking, and more than 1.5 million people are alive who would otherwise have died.
Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. These funds will provide much-needed ongoing operational support, medical workers, laboratory equipment, and educational materials as we continue in our efforts to achieve polio eradication.
As Rotarians, we can all feel very proud of our role in helping to End Polio Now.
