NOVEMBER
Moe Bulletin Issue No. #62
Rotary Club of Moe
Zoom meeting with District Governor
Bill Degnan
President Di will send out Zoom information
Di's Dialogue #62
It is becoming clear the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions will have an impact on our club, particularly as it is an incorporated body.
PDG Tim Moore, (D9820 Learning and Development/Governance), is inviting office holders and interested members to a webinar scheduled for Thursday 4th November at 7.00pm. The aim of the session is to inform clubs of their duties regarding record keeping and enforcement under Victorian legislation, and vaccination requirements for volunteer workers. If you are interested in attending the webinar, please let me know and I will forward Tim’s email to you.
The theme continues. I received an email from Rebecca (Moe RSL) on Friday, advising how they will be moving forward according to the Victorian Government roadmap. In early November, 150 people will be permitted at the venue, however she will confirm when the RSL is ‘ready to move ahead with activities, meetings’ etc.
So, at this stage we will continue to meet online as a whole club, until we get the green light to return to the Moe RSL. (Please read the program outline included in the bulletin).
Regarding Fireside Committee meetings, we can have up to ten visitors in our home so I will leave it up to Committee Chairs to decide meeting arrangements for the first Monday in November.
On Monday, we will have our District Governor online with us. Bill Degnan is looking forward to visiting our club. Usually, the evening is set aside for whatever the DG would like to talk about with members. Bill is happy for us to run our Club Assembly as he is interested in what we are doing. AG Tim Wills will also attend the meeting.
On that same night, please wear a hat in support of ‘Lifting the Lid on Mental Health’ which is an Australian Rotary Health National annual fundraising event. Rog Taylor will be running an amended ‘Melbourne Cup sweep’ in conjunction with Sargeant Barry which will raise funds. Further details included in this Bulletin.
Lastly, please stay safe everyone.

WORLD POLIO DAY – OCTOBER 24TH
Poliomyelitis (Polio) is a paralysing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated through effective vaccination programs.
For more than 30 years, Rotary and its partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. The Rotary Polio Plus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by vaccinating children on a massive scale. As a core partner in the global polio eradication initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building.
In 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries every year. Today, this has been reduced by 99.9 percent, and just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Through the efforts of Rotary and its partners, nearly 19.4 million people who would otherwise have been paralysed are walking, and more than 1.5 million people are alive who would otherwise have died.
Tremendous progress has been made in the fight against polio, but eliminating all cases is going to take even more progress and perseverance. Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. These funds provide much-needed operational support, medical workers, laboratory equipment, and educational materials. Governments, corporations, and private donors all play a crucial role in funding.
The Rotary Club of Moe raises funds to support the End Polio Now program through various projects. In 2021, the project involved selling purple Crocus and purple Dutch Iris bulbs. The colour of these purple bulbs represents the purple dye used to mark the little finger of children who have been vaccinated in endemic countries. Millions of children across the world now know that a freshly painted purple pinkie means freedom from Polio.
Before the planning committee can move forward with plans for the GRGC for next year, we need to consider the following: 1. Raffle Coordinator - Someone is required to oversee the running of the raffle from late January until the golf day. 2. Raffle Prizes - we need to lock in our 3 major raffle prizes before printing tickets. Moe Rotarians have been very generous in the past,
but we cannot just assume that Shen and Michael will come on board again each year. I look forward to hearing from them. 3. Selling Venues - last year we were outside K Mart and Nextra, selling for 3 x 2 hour sessions, 4 days each week.
(Discussion of these issues relies on face to face conversations, but it would be appreciated if Rotarians think about them now.)
The committee would like to thank Helen Morrison for coordinating the raffle in past years.
If we are not able to appoint a Raffle Coordinator, perhaps we can entice 4 Rotarians to take responsibility for 2 week intervals.
The job entails set up and dismantling the table and signs, banking and organising a float each day.
This role becomes an essential factor in the success of our distribution of golf proceeds within our community.
Our presence selling tickets throughout the lead up to the GRGC gives a very real evidence of Rotary in action in Moe.

November Programs:
1 November: Fireside Meetings 8 November: Lisa Twigger: LRH Virtual Walk (possibly Zoom)
As we are not meeting as a club on the Melbourne Cup Eve, here is a possibility -
In next week's bulletin each member will be allocated a number. This will correlate with the starting numbers in the Cup.
No money will be collected, and no pay outs will be made.
However we are encouraging Rotarians to donate their $2 or $5 to Australian Rotary Health's Mental Health Day.
Winners will still heave bragging rights!

40 years of marriage
A married couple in their early 60s are celebrating their
40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic
little restaurant.
Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table.
She said, 'For being such an exemplary married
couple and for being loving to each other for
all this time, I will grant you each a wish.'
The wife answered, 'Oh, I want to travel around the world
with my darling husband.'
The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two
tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her
hands.
The husband thought for a moment:
'Well, this is all very romantic, but an
opportunity like this will never come again. I'm
sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30
years younger than me.'
The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed,
but a wish is a wish.!
So the fairy waved her magic wand and
poof!...
The husband became 92 years old.
The moral of this story:
Men who are ungrateful bastards should
remember fairies are female .....
