SEPTEMBER

Education and Literacy Month

SUPPORTING EDUCATION MONTH

Sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Rotary’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

The Rotary Club of Moe supports education through a number of programs, including the Rotary Junior Community Awards, Student Pride of Workmanship Awards and the Rotary Foundation Student Scholarships.

The Rotary Junior Community Awards are presented to students who complete a range of activities during their final year of primary school. These activities are designed to give the students a variety of experiences in their local community.

Pride of Workmanship awards are presented to students in recognition of their diligence, commitment and willingness to help others and are awarded to students nominated by their school.

The primary purpose of the Foundation student scholarship grant is to provide financial support for secondary students to enable them to more fully participate in the normal curriculum.

The Rotary Club of Moe has partnered with Lowanna College to deliver the scholarship program in 2020.

Di's Dialogue #9

A week of ups and downs...

Beginning with disappointing news the lockdown in Melbourne was to be extended by two weeks. A big bump in the road!

Later in the week, the Latrobe City Council informed Secretary Maureen, the club had not been a successful grant recipient in the minor works category. Much work and research had been undertaken by Barry Dunstan to prepare the grant application and I share his disappointment and frustration. To temper the disappointment, we learned that the minor equipment grant was successful, also prepared by Barry. Many thanks to Barry for efforts to secure funding for club initiatives.

A further grant round -  ‘Community Response and Recovery Package’, has been launched by the Latrobe City Council. The focus is to support community organisations to meet operational costs in a time when they are unable to fund raise. I have asked Len Cairns to follow-up and apply for funding for our club. Applications close on the 19 October.

I also need to thank Diane Wilkinson for chairing a small working party which have been busy reviewing the club constitution and By-Laws. Members have been asked to provide feedback so please find some time to read through our club constitution. By-Laws will be made available to members later.

At our meeting on Monday night, our special guest speakers are Julie Skee (Principal, Newborough East Primary School) and Janine Cruickshank (Prep teacher). I am really looking forward to hearing from both guest speakers to learn more about how students and teachers have adapted to online learning during these times of COVID. Thank you Roger Taylor for working behind the scenes to help organise.

My quote for the week:

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”

– Michael Jordan

As Rotarians, we do make things happen!

Stay safe everyone. Not much longer before we can once again start up our little ‘dinner hubs’

Constitution and By-laws working Group

Proposed New Constitution – Feedback Please

The Constitution and By-Laws Working Group, consisting of President Di Harrison, Len Cairns, Bryon Puddy, Peter Kingsbury and myself, has been busy reviewing the Standard Rotary Constitution and the suggested Club By-Laws over the past few weeks.

Please provide any feedback on the proposed new document, which was distributed to members via Club Runner email on 1st September.    The Constitution and By-Laws working group reviewed the standard Constitution that was developed by District and made some minor changes to develop a Constitution applicable to the operation of our Club.

As the working group is looking to present the final updated Constitution for adoption at the AGM, we would appreciate your feedback within the next week.   If you would like to discuss further, please give me a call.

Purple Crocus Project

An update to our purple crocus project in February/March 2020 to support the End Polio Now campaign.  We have now received some great photos of some of the 500 bulbs which are now blooming in the gardens of Rotarians and their families and friends.

The purple crocus bulbs were chosen for this project to represent the purple dye that is used to mark the little finger of children who have been vaccinated in endemic countries, which has resulted in millions of children across the world vaccinated against this crippling and deadly disease.

As mentioned by President Di in her last Bulletin “Dialogue”, it was wonderful to receive the news recently that the World Health Organisation (WHO) African region has been declared officially certified free of wild poliovirus.

An incredible achievement indeed and another step towards global eradication of polio.

With the impact of Covid-19 on our lives over the past few months, it has been wonderful to receive so many lovely photos of those little patches of purple crocus popping up in gardens and pots to bring a little Spring joy.

Sinnott's One Liners- Welcome back!

My mate Paul often walks into a room and forgets why he is there , he`s a great friend but a terrible fireman.

A neighbour of mine was admitted to hospital suffering from covid 19 and put on a Dyson ventilator, he`s picking up well now.

Ever since it started raining ,all my wife has done is stare through the window. If it gets any heavier I`ll  have to let her in.

I`ve just been to a friends funeral. He died from being hit on the head by a tennis ball, it was a lovely service.
