President's Report
On Monday night our guest speakers were RYLA Chairman Barry Rogers and Hannah Flowers, who provided an excellent overview of Rotary’s youth leadership programs, RYLA and RYPEN.
Barry spoke about the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) program, which has been an official Rotary initiative since 1971 and is open to 18–30‑year‑olds. The program’s leaders are dedicated to helping participants become the best they can be. Throughout the week‑long residential program, participants take part in structured activities designed to build leadership capability, including leadership workshops, team‑building exercises, and opportunities to develop public speaking skills. By the end of the program, participants leave with greater confidence, stronger leadership skills, and a wide range of new abilities that support their personal growth.
Hannah shared her personal experience with RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment). She participated in RYPEN in 2015 and returned as a mentor in 2016. RYPEN is designed for 14–17‑year‑olds and is held over a weekend. The program helps young people build confidence and leadership skills through workshops focused on communication, teamwork, and personal development. Participants also form new friendships and gain a stronger sense of self‑belief. Hannah is now a Program Leader, responsible for developing and designing the RYPEN program, ensuring it continues to inspire and empower young people across the district.
RYPEN is returning to Rotary District 9815 for the first time in seven years, with the next camp to be held from 18–20 September 2026 at The Briars Outdoor Education Camp, Mount Martha. Our Youth Committee is currently in contact with Lowanna Secondary College in the hope that they may identify one or two students who would benefit from participating in the program.
Last Saturday, Maureen Bishop and I attended the Moe Inner Wheel Changeover, held at the Morwell Rose Gardens. It was a lovely afternoon, and we were pleased to represent the Rotary Club of Moe.
Robyn Cross was formally inducted as the President of the Inner Wheel Club of Moe by the Australian President Yvonne Romp. (Pictured below)
Looking ahead, on Saturday, 1 August, the Snow Train will once again be coming through Moe. Members will be serving tea and coffee for travellers when the train arrives back from Traralgon.
This is a wonderful opportunity for community engagement, and further details will be shared with members shortly.
Wheelchair for Kids Presentation at Maryvale Probus Meeting
Victorian Volunteer Coordinator PP Rotarian Robin Noakes, supported by PP Rotarian Alan Bishop, attended the Maryvale Probus Club’s 33rd birthday meeting on 16 July.
Robin invited members to help identify key attributes for an all‑terrain wheelchair for children, and the Maryvale Probus Club responded enthusiastically. They were particularly impressed when the display chair was revealed, prompting a lively Q&A session with plenty of questions and comments.
It was rewarding that, even in a very busy meeting, quite a few members were keen to take contribution details. Robin also met a member of the Hazelwood ladies who crochet 1m square blankets, which go out with the chairs. It is planned to arrange a further visit to them to show some of the videos of children receiving their chairs.
There were quite a few Rotarians from other Rotary Clubs in the room, and this extended our inter club fellowship.
The formal meeting concluded with a presentation by the Coal Valley Male Chorus. Their renditions of some oldies and newbies had many feet tapping.
