Our home is girt by sea,
Our land abounds in natures gifts,
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair!"
FOUR WAY TEST
1.
Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

In Westminster Cathedral, sits the Stone of Destiny.

Souvenired by the English from Scone Castle, it has symbolically crowned the kings of Scotland since the mists of time.

Our destiny is finite and of our own making. We try and push back the halo of ignorance, in the hope that Knowledge and Wisdom will lead us on the right path, through green pastures and still waters.

We hope that whatever the mystery that lies in wait for us, we will be treated kindly by the fates. The Greeks thought the fates were 3 women, one spinning the thread, one weaving it into the fabric of life, and one cutting it.

And so we give back more than life has given to us. This is part of a philosophy was probably imprinted by our parent, or if luck will have it, a mentor.

I come this way but once.... for I may never pass this way again. Make the most of the gifts life has given us.

It is not the cards you hold in your hand, but how you play them.

Not everyone has a winning hand. Be gracious in defeat, and mercyful and humble in victory.

Be fulfilled by the things you do for yourself and for others.

Life can be challenging at times, accept the challenges.

Do your best and never give into revenge or pettiness.

Be of good courage, and do not give in to sham and drudgery, for it is a beautiful world. You just have to find it, even though it sometimes looks like a weed.

This is the end of my year, and there is only one task I have left, and it is to thank you, one and all, for the roles you have played in this Rotary year.

You have been an inspiration to your fellow Rotarians, and to the community at large.  We are nothing but drops of water in the great big ocean of life, but some of them sparkle; ... some of them sparkle.

Stories
April sergeant
It may be 1st April but its no joke that Helen Macdonald didnt have to fight off too many others (well, one other!) after being asked to perform the meeting duties of "Sergeant at Arms" for the month of April.

I am sure we will all give our attention and support to Helen or you might find that you get fined when the time comes.

She might also reveal a little secret which some may or may not know about our Helen. So, give generously as she conducts the Fines Session and brings the meeting to order
Golf Classic night
Despite the wild and windy conditions,  Moe Rotary held another highly successful Gippsland Rotary Golf Classic on 25th March.

We had 36 teams entered on the day which meant that we had a full field with 2 teams of 3 each hitting off each of the 18 holes at 12.00 pm.

The size of the field was basically due to the tremendous work of committee representatives. The club should be greatly appreciative of the efforts of  Len, Helen, Wendy, Diane, John , Robin, Alan and Maureen for their dedication to planning sessions, willingness to follow up all possible leads regarding sponsorship, team recruitment and donations of goods and services, and their enthusiasm for the successful operation of the event.

We sincerely thank Moe Rotarians for their input, both on the day, and for those who assisted with preliminary organisation, many of whom were operating under difficulties.

Finally, we would also wish to acknowledge our friends of Rotary (Kate, David, Brett and Irene) for their assistance in so many ways. Contact has also been made with Inner Wheel through President Suzie, acknowledging yet another outstanding effort

We will be thanking our sponsors in next week's Latrobe Valley Express, and Robin is preparing photos to be attached to our email of thanks to sponsors.

We are still a week or so away from announcing our profit, but it will register in excess of $20,000.

Trivia Night
Trivia Night  Saturday 13 April 7.00pm

The night ran seemlessly smooth, apart from the fireworks at 9pm making the MC Tony Flynn almost take a 5 minute hiatus. Many Rotarians were in attendance with their family friends and other guests. Assistance appreciated from Ross and Helen Macdonald at the reception gate for issuing complimentary drink tickets on arrival and selling raffle tickets, Bill and Kishor who ran the  "Dollar Coin Toss to win a bottle of spirit" and  Dave and Alan Sinnott who drew the raffle and gave out the prizes.

The bottle of spirit as it happens, was won by our very own Alan Bishop, after a second nail biting attempt after almost everyone else had finished, with the coin going around the back of the bottle and LEANING on the box! Congratulations! You couldn't get any closer, unless it was on the top! In President Peters absence, Past President Len closed off the evening by thanking Rog and his Committee for a fun and well executed evening.

Rog too thanked his Committee for their assistance, the venue staff and manager, and of course the services of Tony Flynn. With his other hat as member of the Racing Club Committee, he announced the various membership advantages to the Racing Club.

Final total funds raised for the night will be advised in due course.

MUNA/ RYPEN
Robin's rambles:

Regrettably Lowanna chose not to enter a team for MUNA this year. This was indicative of disappointing numbers of delegations sponsored by clubs. Last advice to me was only 17, so stay tuned to see how MUNA faired this year.

Newborough East PS has 6 kids joining the RJCA program. Newborough only 2 at the last count.
Albert St have 10 kids. Elizabeth St have 18 students enrolled. I visited them yesterday and saw one group making chocolate ripple cake.
Yet again, no chance to get a taste!

Di Harrison and I are attending RYPEN at Summit camp, Trafalgar on Saturday 30th March to support the program and our nominee Kyle Grech-Vella. The weather forecast looks dreadful, so wet weather gear and thermals

MSE Williams Youth Support Fund

MSE Williams (Youth Support) Fund was settled by the Trust on 12 July 2011 in honour of the late Mrs Margaret Sarah Elizabeth Williams, as it is principally funded by the MSE Williams Bequest. Upon her death in 1995, Mrs Williams left $20,000 to the Council for children and youth welfare programs in the Latrobe Valley.

MSE Williams Trust Fund and Independent Scholarship Fund into a perpetual Trust Fund dedicated to the advancement of all young people within our community.

The Trustees believe that all young people deserve the chance to achieve their best. Accordingly, Youth Support Grants are not restricted to a specific study or training path. This will ensure that all grant recipients are given every possible opportunity to pursue their personal goals.

Grants of up to $500 are available to support any young person with determination to advance themselves, in any field of endeavour including (but not limited to) education and training; visual or performing arts; sport; trade skills; music; in order to pay for or subsidise associated expenses e.g. compulsory fees, equipment, textbooks, etc

How do I nominate?

Making a nomination for a Youth Support Grant Program is easy!

Answers the questions in as much detail as possible. The Assessment Panel will want to see that there is a clear idea for use of funds, as well as a genuine need for assistance.

Ensure that you have read and understand the Nomination Criteria (see website)

All applications are to be completed online at  https://latrobecitytrust.smartygrants.com.au/

Winter Solstice

Winter solstice was last Friday 21 June 2019

Here in Australia, we're celebrating the winter solstice - an astronomical phenomenon that occurs each year in June as the Earth orbits the sun. It is the shortest day of the year and the longest night, and the point at which the earth begins her slow turn towards the light

From the 21st, the days in Australia and the rest of the Southern hemisphere will continue to get longer as the earth continues to orbit the sun, getting closer to the sun each day until it reaches the December summer solstice

The solstice has been observed for many thousands of years, as long as people have marked time by the skies, and its a wonderful time of year to retreat inwards and reflect on the wonders of nature
