In Westminster Cathedral, sits the Stone of Destiny.
Souvenired by the English from Scone Castle, it has symbolically crowned the kings of Scotland since the mists of time.
Our destiny is finite and of our own making. We try and push back the halo of ignorance, in the hope that Knowledge and Wisdom will lead us on the right path, through green pastures and still waters.
We hope that whatever the mystery that lies in wait for us, we will be treated kindly by the fates. The Greeks thought the fates were 3 women, one spinning the thread, one weaving it into the fabric of life, and one cutting it.
And so we give back more than life has given to us. This is part of a philosophy was probably imprinted by our parent, or if luck will have it, a mentor.
I come this way but once.... for I may never pass this way again. Make the most of the gifts life has given us.
It is not the cards you hold in your hand, but how you play them.
Not everyone has a winning hand. Be gracious in defeat, and mercyful and humble in victory.
Be fulfilled by the things you do for yourself and for others.
Life can be challenging at times, accept the challenges.
Do your best and never give into revenge or pettiness.
Be of good courage, and do not give in to sham and drudgery, for it is a beautiful world. You just have to find it, even though it sometimes looks like a weed.
This is the end of my year, and there is only one task I have left, and it is to thank you, one and all, for the roles you have played in this Rotary year.
You have been an inspiration to your fellow Rotarians, and to the community at large. We are nothing but drops of water in the great big ocean of life, but some of them sparkle; ... some of them sparkle.
The night ran seemlessly smooth, apart from the fireworks at 9pm making the MC Tony Flynn almost take a 5 minute hiatus. Many Rotarians were in attendance with their family friends and other guests. Assistance appreciated from Ross and Helen Macdonald at the reception gate for issuing complimentary drink tickets on arrival and selling raffle tickets, Bill and Kishor who ran the "Dollar Coin Toss to win a bottle of spirit" and Dave and Alan Sinnott who drew the raffle and gave out the prizes.
The bottle of spirit as it happens, was won by our very own Alan Bishop, after a second nail biting attempt after almost everyone else had finished, with the coin going around the back of the bottle and LEANING on the box! Congratulations! You couldn't get any closer, unless it was on the top! In President Peters absence, Past President Len closed off the evening by thanking Rog and his Committee for a fun and well executed evening.
Rog too thanked his Committee for their assistance, the venue staff and manager, and of course the services of Tony Flynn. With his other hat as member of the Racing Club Committee, he announced the various membership advantages to the Racing Club.
Final total funds raised for the night will be advised in due course.

MSE Williams (Youth Support) Fund was settled by the Trust on 12 July 2011 in honour of the late Mrs Margaret Sarah Elizabeth Williams, as it is principally funded by the MSE Williams Bequest. Upon her death in 1995, Mrs Williams left $20,000 to the Council for children and youth welfare programs in the Latrobe Valley.
MSE Williams Trust Fund and Independent Scholarship Fund into a perpetual Trust Fund dedicated to the advancement of all young people within our community.
The Trustees believe that all young people deserve the chance to achieve their best. Accordingly, Youth Support Grants are not restricted to a specific study or training path. This will ensure that all grant recipients are given every possible opportunity to pursue their personal goals.
Grants of up to $500 are available to support any young person with determination to advance themselves, in any field of endeavour including (but not limited to) education and training; visual or performing arts; sport; trade skills; music; in order to pay for or subsidise associated expenses e.g. compulsory fees, equipment, textbooks, etc
How do I nominate?
Making a nomination for a Youth Support Grant Program is easy!
Answers the questions in as much detail as possible. The Assessment Panel will want to see that there is a clear idea for use of funds, as well as a genuine need for assistance.
Ensure that you have read and understand the Nomination Criteria (see website)
I know some of you are very involved with Farm World at Lardner Park already, but this is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for drought and fire relief on the part of Hastings-Westernport President John (Paddy) Fincham and Liberty Recycling and it would be great if he can have some support during the weekend.
If you have an hour or two at some point that you can use to assist him could you please contact him directly as per the following note from him. Unfortunately Charlie and I will be in New Zealand on Rotary business so will be unable to assist but I'm hoping members can give him a hand.
"I would appreciate a member from the local cluster group to help me at Farm World each from Thursday 11th of April until Sunday 14th of April.
Farm World is open 8:30am until 5pm. An entry pass will be available.
Last week, we had two guest speakers, Anita Huigan-Lloyd, Micro-enterprise Coach, (Good Money store 10 Tarwin Street Morwell) and Moira Laming, representing an e-Lion Club, talking about the impact of the Tonimbuk fires
-Anita presented a slide show of her role in providing a coaching service and microfinance loan for enterprises in the "greater" Latrobe Valley area, an idea started off by the Good Shepherd" program that provided NILS (no-interest loans scheme). Interested youngsters can contact Anita at the Good Money store in Morwell or Anita on 5120 44403 or 0478 650 267, launchme.og.au
-Moira spoke about her role in the Tonimbuk fires, from an e-Lion perspective. Based at the Bunyip Bushfire Recovery Centre at Bunyip, she helped co-ordinate the relief agencies like Red Cross, St Vinnies, Cardiniashire workers, 2 government funded supporters, a dozen or so Samaritans, BlazeAid workers, to work with each other. She stressed the urgency of blanketing needed, which can be donated at the Bunyip recovery centre
-And finally in swindle news, Bryan announced he had sold 143 tickets, a biggest sales of tickets in one day, EVER. Total pool stood at $966, another high on record. President Pet had the first chance at the pot but sadly drew a 6. Then after another drumroll, the luck of the scotsman, Alan Sinnott, picked out THE JOKER and managed to secure himself half the pot at $480. Well done Alan!
-President Pete closed the meeting almost on time, as the incoming Board was invited to join the outgoing Board at the Combined Board meeting

Here in Australia, we're celebrating the winter solstice - an astronomical phenomenon that occurs each year in June as the Earth orbits the sun. It is the shortest day of the year and the longest night, and the point at which the earth begins her slow turn towards the light
From the 21st, the days in Australia and the rest of the Southern hemisphere will continue to get longer as the earth continues to orbit the sun, getting closer to the sun each day until it reaches the December summer solstice
The solstice has been observed for many thousands of years, as long as people have marked time by the skies, and its a wonderful time of year to retreat inwards and reflect on the wonders of nature
