Last Week's Meeting/Next Week's Meeting
Last Week -
As our numbers were predicted to be well down during the month of September, due to members' travel and a variety of other circumstances, it was agreed that we would try different meeting structures during this period.
To that end, we met last week at our usual venue, the Moe RSL, but in Banjo's Restaurant rather than the Function Room.
This proved to be a fine alternative for our 9 members in attendance, and 2 guests (thanks for coming David Morrison and Kate Noakes). We enjoyed welcoming Hutchy back after his Caribbean escapade, and the informal arrangements allowed us all to have a pleasant evening of fellowship.

Next Week -
Again a different setting - we will visit Gippsland Rotary Centenary House where manager (and past Assistant Governor) Carol Crewe will meet us at 6.30 for a 30 minute presentation which will include an explanation of the forthcoming Stage 3 development followed by a tour of the facility.
Those wishing to attend will need to be at GRCH by 6.20 as our timeframe only permits us to stay for 30 minutes, as we will then leave for Love Pizza and Pasta (Hoyle St Morwell, between Princes Hwy and Buckley Streets) for dinner.
I will notify numbers to them Monday morning, and reservation of our table will be from 7.15.
NB: Because I will be an apology, I will require names no later than Sunday night, and will assume that visitors to Centenary House will also be eating together, unless otherwise informed.
I already have acceptances from President Peter, Alan S, Lyn, Helen M, John H, Dave W and Bryon.

Centenary House News
Below is some information regarding Gippsland Rotary centenary House which you may find useful to peruse before Monday evening's visit -
Earlier this year former PM Malcolm Turnbull and Member for Gippsland darren Chester provided a Commonwealth grant of $900,000 which brought the $2.1 million Stage 3 project a step closer.
The building project is now fully funded with a $600,000 contribution from LRH and $80,000 from the Blue Ribbon Foundation. The balance will come from accumulated funds.
Site works were expected to commence in August and Operations Manager Carol Crewe will provide an update on these developments during our visit.
Latrobe City Council is again supporting the project with a Donation in kind of planning and building permits and inspections.
The completion of the project will result in GRCH being able to offer 30 very generous and comfortable family units as well as other supporting infrastructure to guests, making GRCH truly a "home away from home".

School Holidays - Here Come the Grand-kids
School Holidays provide many of us with opportunities to catch up with our grand-children(read: "Mind!").
So to get in the mood, here's some grand-parent flavoured choice bits....

A little girl was diligently pounding away on  her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked.
"I don't know," she replied . "I can't read."

When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure."
"Look in your underwear," he advised. "Mine says I'm 4 to 6."

A six-year old was asked where his grandma lived.
"Oh," he said, "She lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done having her visit, we take her back to the airport."

My young granddaughter called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. She asked me how old I was, and I told him 62.
She was quiet for a moment and then she asked. "Did you start at 1?"

After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting rowdier and rowdier, her patience grew thin. Finally she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room putting them to bed with stern warnings.
As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old saying,  with a trembling voice, "Who was that?"

My grandparents are funny - when they bend over you hear gas leaks, and then they blame the dog.

The Rotary Foundation

Rotary Foundation Report (Reprint)

At the 1917 convention, outgoing Rotary president Arch Klumph proposed setting up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” That one idea, and an initial contribution of $26.50, set in motion a powerful force that has transformed millions of lives around the globe.

The goals of the RF are to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

Kishor has indicated on the front page of the bulletin, that September is Basic Education and Literacy Month - one of Rotary's 6 Areas of Focus.
Here are some facts which you may not be aware of -

  • 31% of secondary school teachers are not professionally trained
  • 75 million children worldwide - 41 million of them girls - have no access to education
  • 677 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate

Some Rotary clubs address Teacher Training needs by providing teacher training, curriculum and supplies for schools
Other clubs support students by promoting student enrolment, sponsoring school feeding programs and providing safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

The Rotary Club of Moe participates in high quality local youth programs, and internationally we have supported our school in north western Bali for the past 10 years, as we become aware of their needs. Those needs may now become even greater after the severe climatic conditions which have rendered their school building unsafe.
