Di's Dialogue # 15

Thank you to everyone who participated in the special DG visit Zoom meeting on Monday night. Key points covered by Mark Humphries included the International Convention being held in Melbourne in 2023; Rotary 100 and the celebrations happening on 21 April, 2021 which will mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia; District 9820 Baton and ideas for using at various events to celebrate R100 at a local level; Foundation and the need to continue the fight to eradicate polio; Club citation and his hope that at least 50% of clubs in the District will achieve a citation; and early planning for the District Conference, which will be held 1-2 May, 2021. DG Mark is particularly keen to see town entry branding updated. We have already responded and Ross Maxfield is working on this and will report back via the Community Committee.

Our AG West Gippsland, Tim Wills, was also present in the Zoom meeting and was warmly welcomed.

Mark's partner, Linda, introduced members to her project and 'Mort' the mosquito! Her project, 'End Malaria in Vanuatu For Good' continues on from the work of Tom Shanahan, who was the Chair of RAM (Rotarians Against Malaria), for many years. Linda is keen to raise money specifically to end malaria in Vanuatu. The Board did discuss supporting the DG Partner's Project and I will report back to members at our Club Assembly on Monday night.

Thank you to Diane Wilkinson, Chair of Foundation/International for the promotion of World Polio Day happening on 24 October (Saturday) and liaising with Bryce Eishold to use social media to broadcast the importance of continuing the efforts to eradicate polio.

Saturday is also the AFL grand final between Richmond and Geelong to be played in Brisbane. My mother was a keen Geelong supporter and so I will be wearing her much-loved blue and white scarf as I watch the match tomorrow night.

Just for something a bit different this week, a classic comment from Dennis Commetti (Football commentator). Context- Matthew Carr and brother Josh were both outstanding mid-fielders for their respective clubs, Fremantle and Port Adelaide. Both wore the number 9. Inevitably they collided on field.

Dennis Commetti: 'That's a tough one for the umpires. A two-Carr collision and both with the same rego'

Enjoy the match and for those who don't follow football, I hope you have a lovely weekend doing something that warms your heart and soul...

President 'Go Cats' Di

November 2: Melbourne Cup Eve and Hat Day for Mental Health

As we have had to forego our usual social get-togethers because of COVID restrictions, Rotarians have missed out on some of the fun aspects of Rotary.

President Di is keen to inject some pazzaz into the meeting on 2 November, so the proposed fireside meeting has been shelved for that evening, and replaced with a Melbourne Cup Eve program, albeit on Zoom.

As we usually raise funds for Australian Rotary Health in October, Hat Day will also be incorporated into the evening.

Aspects of the Program Include -

*It’s an Opportunity to Host a Friend
*Dress up theme for “At the Races”

*Dress up theme for Hat Day -  (it could be race gear or any funny or your favourite stunning or amusing hat)
*Melbourne Cup Trivia.

*Melbourne Cup Sweep -  As we are time poor at Zoom meetings, there will be just one $5.00 sweep this year, only for members, and Hutchy and Rog will conduct the draw, and announce horses during the meeting.

*Cost - A charge of $6.00 per head is suggested to cover both a horse draw and a $1.00 donation to ARH for Mental Health Week.

*Payment Arrangements – Payments of $6.00 should be made online into our Rotary account
BSB 033-128  Account Number 108118 before the event. (NOTE: account correction!)
(If you choose to make a more substantial donation to ARH it can be included in your payment.) Remember to include your name and amount when making your payment.
Treasurer Helen will announce our ARH contribution at a future meeting.

*Distribution of Winnings – Once all payments have been received, winners will be paid out.
Footnote: While organisers are making the assumption that all members would wish to participate in the sweep, there is no compulsion. Just notify me if you prefer not to join in the sweep.
