Len’s Log 11:

Hi Folks,

This last week we had our District Governor’s annual visit. Governor Lynne Westland met with the Club Board members and we went through our prepared papers on our Strategic Plan and all aspects of the club’s operations, plans for the 2016-2017 year and discussed aspects of the Rotary International and District year. The Governor’s partner, Trevor,  was an apology for the meeting but we did mention his chosen Charity for the year which is Wheelchairs for Kids and the club donated $200, which is one wheelchair.

Governor Lyn spoke to the whole club over dinner and she was vey gracious and supportive. She particularly singled out our website as being one of the best she had seen across the 50 clubs in the District. (Congratulations to our busy webmaster, Bryon Puddy).  We were reminded of International President (2016-2017), John Germ’s key two areas of emphasis: Polio Plus and Membership of Rotary, by the Governor.

In all this was a friendly and open meeting with the DG. We did, at the Board meeting raise the increasing costs of Rotary Membership and how we needed to be aware of the potential impact of such increases. Lyn was very open to this discussion and aware of differences across some country towns.

It was good to be back at Rotary after my absence for a couple of weeks and I want to thanks Past President Michael Koch for filling in and especially Acting Secretary and Treasurer Bryon Puddy for all the support and very hard work he has so far put in.

Thanks to Maureen Bishop as secretary for pulling all the final paper work needed for such a visit and I am glad to hear that the Botanic Gardens project is flying ahead (with a grant from the Latrobe City to boot!) under Alan Bishop’s busy leadership. Well done.

Now on to the Marigold’s project for October and our visibility in Moe campaign.

Also soon we have to prepare for a Bali School visit.

Stories
RI President's Message
There was a very timely message from RI President John Germ in this month's Rotary Down Under.
Under the heading "Looking Ahead" he mentioned many of the issues which our club has been discussing over the past 12 months, such as...
  • prioritising community as part of our leadership
  • clubs need to be flexible if they are to appeal to the next generation of Rotarians, whether they are the young, retirees or working people
  • Rotary needs to seek out new partnerships and be open to collaborative relationships with other organisations
  • RI must take a prominent role in promoting itself.
His last point is critical as Rotary, with much corporate support, closes in on the total eradication of polio (just 74 cases world-wide last year).  For many of the reasons listed above, Rotary needs to tell the world of the significant role we have played to achieve this monumental state, so that future members will be drawn to our organisation.
Report from Last week
Guest Speaker from last week - Mark Themann

Having lived in Switzerland, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and now residing in Yinnar, you would expect that the current Latrobe Regional Gallery director would be an interesting chap.
If so, you'd be quite right!
His talk, following the visit last week to the new Moe Library, has reintroduced our club to culture (what next Peter Kingsbury? A trip to the opera?) In fact, a future program for Peter to consider may be a visit through the Gallery followed by a Rotary dinner at the gallery cafe.
With anew website, a new technician, new up-to-date signage and revolutionary ideas, it seems LRG is certainly going ahead! Mark showed us several of the exhibitions which are on display in the facility's 7 galleries housed across 2 floors, with 850 metres of floor space. In addition, the ground floor is a sculpted courtyard.
Keep your eye out for the 2017 exhibitions including The Glass Collection, "MINE" from London's Tate Museum and Films and Video Art from South Africa.

DOGS...You gotta love them!
The last word - famous quotes about man's best friend -

Don't accept your dog's admiration is conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.
                                                                                                 - Ann Landon

Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like has never washed a dog.
                                                                                 - Franklin P Jones

If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven,
and very, very few persons.                                                                    - James Thurber

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail, not his tongue.
                                                                                               - Unknown
