Robin's Rambles #24

Our Pride of Workmanship evening on 5 December lived up to expectations with a great night celebrating a group of students who had done their school proud in 2022. There were big smiles all round as Bryce deftly led us through the evening. A big thanks to Roger and the Vocational team for organising the event and the Community team with many willing helpers who put together the dinner and clean up.

I think it would be fair to say we are looking forward to a bit of a rest as this first half of the year has been very, very, busy.

Yet, I am jumping into 2023 with a request to SAVE THE DATE for our Memory Lane night. Put in your diaries for you and your partner Monday 30 January. We will be looking back at olden and more recent days with many culprits and the usual suspects having a good time.

I hope you can all get along to our Christmas break up dinner on Monday 12th.  We continue various traditions,
  1. Wear something festive,
  2. Please bring something for our hamper collection
  3. Please prepare a Christmassy joke.  The competition will have a suitable prize donated by Rudolf.
Thanks to Di Harrison for putting the evening together, to Bryce who will help MC, and to Santa who will give gifts to children young and old, as in previous years. More photo opportunities here.

Wishing good health, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

President Robin

Rotary Area of Focus December – Fighting Disease
Rotarians Against Malaria

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) Australia are volunteers who are passionate about eliminating malaria in partner countries. RAM is an Australian registered charity and is part of the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS).  Malaria is a deadly disease that has killed or debilitated people for centuries.  While inroads have been made to reduce the incidence of disease, malaria remains a disease that causes over 400,000 fatalities every year, many of whom are children.  Malaria significantly impacts on the health of over 200 million people each year, with a particularly heavy burden on poorer communities, mostly in Africa and in other tropical regions.

Malaria has almost been eliminated in Timor Leste and Vanuatu is aiming for elimination in the next few years.  However, the disease remains a significant problem in Papua New Guinea, Eastern Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands.

RAM supports projects that aim to control and ultimately eliminate malaria and works with government health programs in partner countries to implement strategies in line with WHO guidelines.  RAM supports projects that work to reduce both the mosquito population and the opportunities for mosquitoes to spread of the malaria parasite.  Projects have included the provision and distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLINs), indoor residual spraying programs and environmental improvements.
