Program: Speaker - Scott Grant

All projects, scholars, and vocational training teams funded by global grants work toward specific goals in one or more of the Foundation’s six areas of focus:

MAY:
YOUTH SERVICE MONTH

FOCUS: Commitment to develop tomorrows leaders by investing time and energy in them today

We recognise the positive change that young people can make. As Rotarians, we can help them through the various  leadership activities and celebrate their successes with them, whether it be through local community and school awards, or internationally through the Youth Exchange Program, with a view to gain a better understanding of different cultures and so fostering world peace.

Len’s Log 45

Last week we had a very useful Club Assembly meeting where we discussed the Board’s recommendations about distribution of our funds raised over this year and agreed on a set of donations across the community and the referral of other proposals sent to us to our Club Committees for consideration.

It was a frank and useful meeting.

This coming week we are heading to Noi’s Kitchen Thai Restaurant at 69 Hotham Street, Traralgon for a social meal and we should enjoy a great night.

See you there. The food is great.

Rotary's 111th Birthday
Rotary’s Birthday 2017:
Below are some ideas that we could use to celebrate Rotary’s 111th birthday later this month –
1. Circulate all kinds of promotional media messages and images to social media followers.
2. Visit www.rotary.org/myrotary and download the colourful birthday cake logo for our club’s facebook cover.
3. Plan a special club meeting on or near February 23, with a high profile speaker and invite guests and/or partners. (Even a date in March or even April would not be too late for this plan).
4. Present a framed Four Way Test for all local schools or those participating in our Rotary Junior Community Awards. This could be done at their school assembly, at the Pride of Workmanship evening (presented to principals) or any other suitable opportunity, for display in school foyer.
5. Sponsor a local event for school children – maybe a Walk for World Peace – perhaps with special prizes and media coverage.

Another Message for World Understanding Month
February is Peace and Conflict Resolution Month
Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half of those killed in conflict are children, and 90 percent are civilians.
We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

How Rotary makes help happen:
Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Moe Rotary History
HISTORY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF MOE

Year 1985-86 Moe Rotary got with the entrepreneurial 80’s with Clive O’Donnell as Club President and Greame Ryland running the Old Gippstown Night Out. Clive had Peter Euman as Club Secretary and Brian O’Reilly as Treasurer. The Highlight of the year was the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship to John Dwyer who had contributed greatly to the Club over a period of 28years and made a fine contribution to the public life of Moe in many areas. The Old Gippstown Night Out was a great success and a profit of $6,000 was made. A major donation of $3,000 was made to the Life Skills’ Centre, while a further $1,000 was donated to Old Gippstown.

The International Committee, led by Ben Verschuur, had a busy year. Three Moe Students, Jocelyn Puddy, Michelle Unwin and Nicole Lewis, participated successfully in the NZ Exchange. A fund raising Golf Day with the financial assistance of local and national sponsors, raised approximately $1,900. The funds went to five selected IPAC projects – Illiteracy Eradication Program, Bangladesh; Village Workshop Training Centre, Kenya; Ludhiana Treatment of Tuberculosis, India; Economical Development of Ramchandrapur, Bandladesh; Eye Care (Christian Medical College) India. On the 28th October Fred Bellamy from the Rotary Club of Warragul, gave a most interesting talk illustrated by slides of a recent FAIM project in Papua New Guinea.

Community Service Chairman, Doug Cooney, reported that the Botanical Gardens Project continued to move slowly. The major achievement in 1985-86 in this area was the carrying out of embankment works along Narracan Creek using $1,000 made available by the Rural Water Commission through Moe City Council.

Vocational Service, Led by Bryon Puddy, reported an active year. A Careers Night was held in conjunction with Yallourn Technical School, while the” Awards to Outstanding Employees and Businesses “were continued. The Club donated Medallions for the winners of various divisions of the Work Skills’ Australia contests held at the Yallourn College of TAFE in July.

A Significant initiative was the introduction of programs on Management Techniques for interested Rotarians after the third meeting each month. These sessions were well patronised. Dr. Barrington Thomas concluded a very productive program with a challenging address on” Old and New Perspectives in Leadership” at a Club Dinner Meeting.

Nine Important Facts To Remember As We Grow Older

#9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world.

#8 Life is sexually transmitted.

#7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

#6 Men have 2 motivations: hunger and hanky panky, and they can't tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.

#5 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.

#4 Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.

#3 All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

#2 In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.

#1 Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow.

The Job interview

A bloke goes to the local council to apply for a job in the office. The interviewer asks him, "Are you allergic to anything?"
He replies: "yes, caffeine."

"Have you ever worked for the public service before?"
"Yes, I was in the army," he says, "I was in Iraq for two tours."

The interviewer says: "That will give you five extra points toward employment."
Then he asks: "Are you disabled in any way?"
The guy says: "Yes, a mine exploded near me when I was there and I lost a leg and both of my nuts."

The interviewer grimaces and then says: "OK, you've got enough points for me to take you on right away. Our normal hours are from 8am to 4pm but you can start tomorrow at 10am, and carry on starting at 10am every day."

The bloke is puzzled and asks: "If the work hours are from 8am to 4pm, why don't you want me here until 10am? I'm not looking for any special treatment."

"What you have to understand is that this is a council job," the interviewer says. "For the first two hours, we just stand around drinking coffee and scratching our nuts. There's no point in you coming in for that."
