Robin's Rambles #14

Club Assembly was well attended, with 3 joining us on Zoom.  As usual the chairs reported the progress in their  respective Committees. I advised that the Rotary Club of Moe Strategic Plan is with Board members for review and I hope to send to club members ahead of discussion at the 3 October meeting.

We were pleased to acknowledge 10 years of service by Shen Guo as I presented him with his 10 year service certificate.

The fine session was particularly lively. (I think members were wearing funny hats.)

The meeting concluded with John Hutchinson presenting the tribute to Australia. He first divested himself of several layers of clothing to reveal he was wearing a Brisbane Lions Guernsey, to much applause. He then introduced the club to the words of “Up there Cazaly”, reading verse 1, and then the club joined him in the renditions of the chorus. Great fun. Thank you John.

We all wish Michael and Bill a speedy recovery and look forward to Monday 3 Oct when Michael will fill us in on the details of his Bali trip.

All members to please try and fill a table for the upcoming Jefferson Smith music night at Turfside on November 5th

Supporting Education
Rotary Area of Focus for September is Supporting Education.   The Rotary Club of Moe is involved in our local community in helping to support education through a variety of programs managed through the International & Foundation Committee and the Vocational Service Committee.  These programs include:
  • The provision of a Rotary Foundation Student Scholarship in partnership with Lowanna College.  These scholarships are funded equally from Club funds and a grant through Rotary District 9820.
  • Ongoing support for the school in Baninyong in Bali, which has included provision of uniforms, provision of masks for the children during the Covid-19 pandemic, educational supplies and building projects to improve school amenities.
  • The distribution of the Super Mooper series of books to primary schools in the 3825 catchment area.  These books were donated to the Rotary Club of Moe by author Fiona Harris.
  • Facilitating the Rotary Junior Community Awards for Year 6 students where they undertake a series of activities and learn your skills.  The students are also involved in presentation of their activities to the Rotary Club.
  • Presentation of Pride of Workmanship student awards annually to a student from each of the local primary and secondary schools.   The students are identified by their teaches for their initiative, enthusiasm and willingness to assist.
Throughout the world, there are more than 775 million people over the age of 15 who are illiterate.  To help address this, Rotarians all over the world work to support and implement programs and projects that facilitate the delivery of educational programs for people of all ages, with the goal of strengthening the capacity of communities to increase literacy and reduce disparities.  Programs include teacher training, adult literacy, education for vulnerable groups including refugees, schools for freedom and coaching programs for teachers.
