Rotary Golf Day
Last Week's Appeal for Assistance to Support Aspects of the Golf Day

I was very pleased in the response for assistance included in last week's bulletin and Maureen's update and reminder yesterday.

As a result of the thoughtfulness of Rotarians Peter, Rhonda and Bryon we now have the wine required for golf prizes, the slab of beer for the putting competition and all the 4 servings of coleslaw.

In addition Lyn and Di Wilkinson have agreed to make potato salad, so all we really need now is 2 more potato salads for 25 - 30 people.
Let Maureen or myself know if you can assist.

We have met with Yallourn Golf Club's venue manager to work out COVID expectations and operational matters.

Now that the field is almost full, next week's jobs will include:

          ***finalizing manpower
***determining the exact hours Rotarians will be assisting on course (Maureen requests you notify her)
***organizing the duty roster for the day
***finalizing players addresses so that our District Insurance Disclaimers are completed in advance, and simply awaiting each player's signature when they register on the day
***formulating the 36 teams across the 18 holes for the shotgun start
***completing the prize list for the golfers presentation
          ***miscellaneous issues as they arise.

Best wishes,
Rog

We have just over 2 weeks days to go   …

Planning for the golf day is now well under way and we are happy to announce that we have potentially 34-35 teams registered which equates to over 100 entries.  Invoices have been issued and funds are rolling in!!!!

As previously advised, the format of the day will be slightly different from previous years therefore the duty roster will also change.

There will be no morning bbq as every player will receive a lunch pack when they register (prepared by the Inner Wheel Club of Moe).  A number of members will be approached to attend to specific tasks such as on the registration desk and erecting signs and banners.

Our evening meal will be a bbq prepared by our members using both our Rotary BBQ and Yallourn Golf Club BBQ. It will consist of barbecued sausage, burger and probably a kebab, with sides of tossed salad, coleslaw and potato salad together with a dinner roll.  Sweets to follow.

The majority of jobs will be required from approx. 3 pm onwards when we will be preparing the evening meal.

We will require members to assist in the following areas:
Setting up and cooking bbqs; setting up bain marie; preparing salads; preparing cutlery; serving and clean up afterwards – just to mention a few

I will be preparing a roster over the next couple of days and I now request that every member contact me to confirm their availability.

Please advise your preferred time as follows:
  • All day
  • Morning session: 9am to 12.00
  • All afternoon
  • 3.00pm - 5.00pm
  • 5.00pm - to close (approx 7.30)
As our Golf Day is a whole club annual event, it would be great to have 100% attendance.  This is always a great opportunity to show the members of the public how well our club works together and for the community.

Providing water and sanitation

Rotary Area of Focus March: Providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene

The lack of access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene resources is one of the world’s biggest health problems — and one of the hardest to solve.

Rotary has worked for decades to provide people with clean water by digging wells, laying pipes, providing filters, and installing sinks and toilets. But the biggest challenge has come after the hardware is installed. Too often, projects succeeded at first but have eventually failed in the long-term.

As a result, a significant review was undertaken, including a focus on sustainability to help plan more effective projects. This resulted in a shift in focus for projects, which now stresses a needs-based approach with Rotary working with local experts to make sure the projects fit the local need and are sustainable.

It is recognised that one of the difficulties  impacting on project sustainability is the ongoing human  involvement that is required. Collaboration, connections, community engagement and community ownership are all essential to success, including collaborations with organisations that can provide complementary resources, funding, technology, contacts, knowledge of culture and other expertise.

To succeed in the long term, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs must also provide information and education to support good hygiene practices in order to reduce diseases such as cholera, dysentery and pneumonia. Support for community leaders and educators is now a key component of Rotary WASH projects.

Another significant sanitisation and hygiene issue across the world is the provision of adequate toilet facilities. According to the United Nations, more than 4.5 billion people live without a safe toilet. A lack of toilets leads to disease and, in a number of countries, prevents some girls from going to school. The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central facilitates Operation Toilets, a program that builds toilets and delivers WASH education to schools in developing countries including India and Ethiopia. Next week, the Rotary Club of Moe will welcome Mark Balla who will provide us with more information about Operation Toilets Australia.
