President Michael's Mumbles.
Well the time has come - this is my last president’s report for the year, and what a year we have had. It has been enjoyable working with a great team, of dedicated Rotarians.
This Monday will be change over, out with the old and in with the new. I hope all Moe Rotarians will be able to attend this special night and see the induction of President Elect Len become our new leader for the year.
I would like to wish Len and his team a wonderful and productive year. I also would like to thank every Rotarian for the opportunity to have served as your President for 2015-16.
P.S. I am still not counting the hours to changeover.
The 16th Gippsland Rotary Golf Classic held at the beautiful Yallourn Golf course on the 21st March 2016 was a great day again due to the generous support of our Sponsors, Community, Rotarians, Golfers and all those who participated on the day and in the evening.
The weather was perfect and appreciated by all as was the course which was excellent so that the players and workers had a day that was enjoyed by all. The winners in the golf appreciated the generosity of the sponsors and the raffles and auctions were very well supported and everyone was a winner on the day.
We raised over $20,000.00 on the day and this money will be distributed by the Rotary Club of Moe over the next couple of months. As indicated before the event, the major beneficiaries will be Latrobe Regional Hospital, Gippsland Rotary Centenary House, Rotary Club of Moe Emergency Relief Fund and projects and support of organizations in our local community.
The major winners of the golf were:
The Best 3 Person Ambrose team was a repeat of last year’s result when Diane’s Demons consisting of Matt Wilkinson, Brad Thomas and Luke Middleton were successful with a great score of 56 1/2 nett.
The Runner’s up were the Do It Right team of Bill Williams, Marie Brien-Williams and Kevin Brien with another top score of 59 2/3 nett.
Third place went to the R & R Hair Co consisting of Steve Horter, Daryl Hall and Mick Elswyk who finished with a score of 60 1/2 nett.
Fourth place went to a The Champs with a talented team, of Dennis Hicks, Alsitair Tompkin and Danny McKeown with a score of 60 ½ nett.
The Best Rotary Team and winner of the Claude Staff Memorial Trophy was the team from Rotary Club of Moe consisting of Peter Kingsbury, John Hutchinson and Alan Bishop with a score of 59 5/6 nett.
The Best Ladies team were the Pink Ladies with Lyn McAlister, Evelyn Graske and Lola Carter with a winning of 66 1/3 nett
The Rotary Club of Moe thanked Yallourn Golf Club for their excellent presentation of the course and Clubhouse and the great service provided to all throughout the day and the evening. Again, thanks to all our Sponsors for being an important part of a great day and we look forward to repeating our success again in 2017.
By prioritising Maternal and Child Health month, Rotary improves access to medical services for mothers and their children. These efforts are aimed at reducing the number of children under 5 who die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care and poor sanitation - a figure that is currently estimated at 7 million.
More than 80% of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproduction health services and trained health care workers. Rotary provides education, immunisation, birthing kits and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmissions, how to breast feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
Gippsland Rotary Golf Classic Letters of Thanks - Letters to sponsors have been prepared and distributed to members, who are requested to pass them on to their sponsor contact as soon as possible. GRGC Proceeds - Treasurer Diane reported that some collections are still to be finalised, but event profits are likely to be between $22 -25,000. A mighty effort! Program - Len reminded us that Board meets on 18 Aril and don't forget that there won't be rotary on the 25th, Anzac Day. Len will attend Presidential Elect's Training Session (PETS) with Margaret this weekend. This year's PETS involves 4 districts and will be conducted in Ballarat. Yallourn Energy BBQ (Sunday 17 April) - Lyn reminded us of the need for the volunteers to meet for their pre-BBQ briefing at 9.30. First Aid Kit - Thanks to Kishor for the donation of this kit. It will get its first outing at the barbecue on 17 April. Combined Service Club Dinner - Although not yet finalised, it is understood that Moe Lions (this year's host club) wish to change the date from 3 May to the 17 May. Watch this space!
DISTRICT EVENTS: Saturday 2 July - Warragul Changeover Sunday 3 July - District Changeover at Warragul Country Club Monday 4 July - Hazelwood Changeover Monday 4 July - Traralgon Central Friday 8 July - Trafalgar (at Yarragon)
*The older you get the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have become really good friendst*
Feeling tired and listless? Run down? Constantly exhausted? Then spare a thought for what your body goes through each day to help you keep up and about. Every day these things happen: Heart - Your heart pumps 7000 litres of blood through its chambers, and beats more than 100,000 times.
- You take about 17,000 breaths without thinking about any of them. Brain - Your brain works non-stop. It is estimated that approximately 50,000 thoughts pass through daily.
- The brain and mouth allow us to speak an average of around 5000 words a day. Eyes - You blink about 28,000 times, keeping the eyes clean and moist. Body heat - Your body produces the same amount of heat each day as 25 light bulbs. Kidneys - Yor kidneys contain tiny filters which in turn filter nearly 2000 litres of blood Cells - The cells in your stomach produce an alkaline substance to neutralise stomach acid. (Without this your stomach would digest itself).
- Red blood cells literally shoot around the body taking less than 60 seconds to complete a full circuit.
- Most amazing of all, your blood cells regenerate themselves every single day - so new taste buds every 10 days, new nails every 6-10 months, new bones every 10 years and even a new heart every 20 years.
- The average male's testicles manufacture 10 million new sperm cells daily. (Make of that what you will!)
FOOTNOTE: So next time that you think your body is starting to creak, just think about the incredible things that are happening inside it every day, because all of us really are a miracle. With thanks to Ross Maxfield for this contribution.
A husband wanted to call the hospital to ask about his pregnant wife, but accidentally dialled the MCG.
Quite concerned about his wife's welfare, he inquired how the situation was going.
He was shocked to hear the reply, which stated that, "Everything's fine! Three are out already and it is hopeful that they get another seven out before lunch. The last one was a duck." Thanks Lyn.
