ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free,
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea,
Our land abounds in natures gifts,
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair!"
FOUR WAY TEST
1.
Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Well, I'm sorry this musing is a little late as I have been doing some in-depth research on Heroism. This was prompted by a suggestion at last week's board meeting.

The suggestion was that we should honour our Rotary Super-heros in a more tangible way. It is just not fitting enough that our heroes have reached the pantheon of Walhalla. The hall of the mountain King is a might chilly this time of year, with one of the best years for skiing for sometime.

So, I thought I had better delve into the latest research on Heroism. Not just your ordinary run of the mill 'for valour' stuff. Being google savvy, it just took a couple of key strokes to enter the world of gaming super heroes. There is a whole world out there at our finger tips.

You too can have all the traits of a Hugh Jackman Wolverine, or snap freeze the bad guys and girls. Not only do you have something that you excel at, that can repel the opposition, but wait there's more. You can have gender options. It seems a bit Politically Incorrect that the female characters in the Outwatch game have to wear bathing costumes. If you are into more morally correct gaming, there is Godville.  To reach saintly status you need lots of encouragement lest you stumble to the other end, where the really evil people are.

As for me, I have not got over my fixation for Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Her weaponry and fast reloads are of legendary status. Maybe that is what Bazza from Moe South was aiming at. We should be legends in our own lunch time. A great slogan, but harder to achieve.

In the meantime, we will just have to be mere mortals and gaze up at the pantheon of heroes, the John Dwyers and Claude Staffs. And try and be everyday heroes, mow the lawns and turn the sausages at the next sausage sizzle, while we dream...

Stories
May is Youth Service Month
May on the Rotary calendar is Youth service month, or as it was previously known, New Generations. Youth Service is the fifth and newest Avenue of Rotary Service.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects and exchange programs and aims to provide innovative and practical opportunities to assist and motivate young people in our communities to acquire learning and life skills.

Youth Service is an investment in the future. A commitment to Youth Service within and through our clubs is a commitment to the next generation of potential Rotarians and the ongoing future and health of our clubs.

Clubs need to engage with young people and this is frequently via schools with which the club has an association. It is usually through these schools that students are sourced or recommended for our many Rotary Youth Service programs. We only need to observe our commitment to primary school programs such as the Rotary Junior Community Awards and the end of year Pride of Workmanship presentations to see how effective work among the young can be. Add to this our on-going commitments to RYPEN, (unfortunately cancelled by District this year)  and the National Youth Science Forum, we can see that secondary students are also well catered for.

Another means of engaging with young people is via Rotaract, Interact and Earlyact. This has become a more difficult assignment locally, but there is no doubt that clubs and clusters who have succeeded in this field have certainly provided wonderful opportunities for the next generation.

Model United Nations Assembly - Cowes May 18-20 2018
MUNA 2018
The delegates from Traralgon College, representing Germany, are Year 10 students, Chantelle Young and Kylie Wan, and they are supported by their teacher Karen Anders. All 3 have been invited to prepare some statements on 2 of the 6 resolutions which they will speak to at the May 18-20 MUNA weekend at Cowes.
The invitation has been extended to them to attend this Monday's May 14 dinner meeting with an appraisal of the program to follow on 21 May.

This year our District 9820 MUNA organisers are encouraged by a record number of 35 participating teams, which should ensure a busy and enlightening weekend for all. In preparation for the “United Nations” assembly, students are required to formulate opinions on 6 resolutions, and then base their arguments from their country’s point of view. They are probably fortunate to be the German delegates as there should be ample research material for them.
This year’s resolutions relate to the following –
  • Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
  • Protection of Global Climate for Present and Human Generations
  • The Situation of the Rohingya People in Myanmar
  • The Situation in the Syrian Arab Republic
  • Efforts to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls
  • Refugees.
We wish the team great success with their involvement in this year’s Model United Nations Assembly.

Annual Reports
Reminder to Board Members: Annual Reports

Outstanding reports from Chairs would be greatly appreciated if they were sent to the Secretary no later than the end of May.
This provides plenty of time for the Secretary to proof read and edit prior to forwarding them to Maureen for collation and production of this year's Annual Report.

Senior Driver

SENIOR DRIVER from SUN CITY CENTRE

My neighbour was working in his yard when he was startled by a late-model car that came crashing through his hedge and ended up in his front lawn.

He rushed to help an elderly lady driver out of the car and sat her down on a lawn chair.

He said with excitement, "You appear quite elderly to be driving."

"Well, yes, I am," she replied proudly.  "I'll be 97 next month, and I am now old enough, that I don't even need a driver's license anymore."

He asked "How do you know?"

"The last time I went to my doctor, he examined me and asked if I had a driver's license.

I told him, yes and handed it to him."

He took scissors out of the drawer, cut the license into pieces, and threw them in the waste basket, saying,
'You won't need this anymore.'

So I thanked him and left!
