Di's Dialogue # 28

'Perseverance' is a word I heard frequently on Friday after the successful landing of NASA's Rover on the planet Mars. For those interested in space exploration, this was an amazing event!

But it made me think of our own Rotary International program 'End Polio' and the perseverance needed to successfully eradicate the debilitating disease. Rotary has been working hard to eliminate polio for more than 35 years. Rotary was the first organisation to push for a polio-free world and many Rotarians have been part of fundraising, vaccination, and advocacy efforts which have seen a reduction in polio cases worldwide by more than 99.9%. Perseverance is needed to continue the goal to eradicate polio globally! And as the promo says, 'We are this Close'!

Back to NASA and the successful landing on Mars. The first tweet sent from the Rover via NASA made me smile: 'Perseverance will get you anywhere'

On a more local front, perseverance has been needed to get through our recent state-wide Stage 4 Lockdown which officially ended at midnight on Wednesday. Hopefully, there will be no need for any further 'circuit-breaker' lockdowns...

On Monday night, we are having a Club Assembly face-to-face meeting at the Moe Hotel. Arrive at 6.15pm for 6.30pm start. The meeting will run through to 8.00pm. You are welcome to arrive a bit earlier to complete your meal order slip if you want to have a meal. The slips are collected from the table you wish to sit at in the Back Room of the Hotel. The meal choice will be listed on the slip of paper. Meals are to be ordered and paid for in the Bistro. Drinks can be purchased at the main bar adjacent to the Bistro. I have asked for table service when the meals are served for those members who would like to order drinks during the meeting. Hopefully this will not cause too much disruption.

If you do not wish to attend the face-to-face meeting on Monday 22 February, please contact Robin Noakes as soon as possible and he will send out a Zoom meeting invitation link to you.

Thank you to the hardworking Golf Committee, led by Chair, Rog Taylor. No doubt he will provide an update to members on Monday night together with a report regarding our raffle ticket sales. Thanks also to Helen Morrison for dealing with a couple of unexpected issues with ticket sales this week! My willingness to participate in the weekly raffle ticket sales is somewhat dampened by the costs I have incurred over the past two weeks: last week I 'won' a parking ticket for overstaying in the Moe CBD and this week, a flat tyre and damaged wheel rim. I guess I'll just have to persevere and hope things turn around this week.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday night at the Moe Hotel.

Rotary Area of Focus February: Promoting Peace

Rotary Action Group for Peace

The Mission of the Rotary Action Group for Peace is ‘To serve as a resource to Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and Districts by supporting the peace work of Rotarians worldwide’.

What is a Rotary Action Group?

A Rotary Action Group (RAG) is a Rotary International approved autonomous, international group with a passion for a particular type of service. Rotarian Action Groups provide assistance and support to Rotary clubs and districts in planning and implementing service projects in their respective areas of expertise.

Rotary Action Groups are a group of committed Rotarians, Rotarians’ partners, Rotaractors, Rotary Peace Fellows and other Rotary program alumni working together outside club structures with the help of telecommunications and driven by the common interest of peace.

The Rotary Action Groups for Peace promote building a world beyond war and instead promotes the premise that together “We Wage Peace”.  Some of the ways this can be pursued are outlined on the Rotary Action Group for Peace web page, including:

Create educational opportunities

Education is one of the most important investments a community can make for its future peace. Education improves health and livelihoods, contributes to social stability, and drives long-term economic growth at the individual, community, and national levels. Proper education allows individuals the opportunity to reach their true potential and will be better suited to support themselves, their families, and their communities. For women and girls in vulnerable populations, each additional year of school can increase a woman's earning by up to 20%.

Peace at the Centre of Climate Crisis and Sustainability

Supporting the Environment is Rotary's newest area of focus.   Like Peace & Conflict Resolution, the Environment is foundational to the success and resiliency of each Rotary area of focus. To have clean water to drink and prevent disease, we must keep pollutants out of our rivers and waterways. To keep communities resilient to economic problems and to feed the masses, the soil must be fertile to continue to grow crops. Learning to live with the environment sustainably for generations to come is a core educational element to prevent conflicts in resource scarcity and climate change. Preserving nature, protecting biodiversity, and building green solutions to peace obstacles will help ensure resilient, sustainable positive peace communities today and long into the future.
