WE GIVE THANKS
ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free,
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea,
Our land abounds in natures gifts,
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair!"
FOUR WAY TEST
1.
Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Len’s Log 16

Another busy week as we head into our first Saturday (15th October) in Moore Street for our Rotary Club of Moe Awareness and Marigolds Project.

We will have a strong team present (thanks to all those who have volunteered) with our BBQ set up for a Sausage Sizzle and our Marigold Punnets ready for any takers for a gold coin.

Our town this week has the Moe Cup, with many Rotarians involved in supervising the Parking and possibly doing some betting!

A big sale in the shops with the Moe Traders going strong and then our efforts on Saturday morning in the middle of town.

Our Bali Group through Nathan Harding’s International Committee is off early November and we are raising funds for the new boys’ urinals at the school to replace old and broken toilets. We are also trying to arrange to have one of the girl students assessed for a diagnosis of what might be done for her disability in the future if there is any possibility of treatment.

Later this month we will be having our first Breakfast informal recruitment opportunity meeting at Turn Back Time Café in Moe (at the railway end of Shaw’s arcade). This will be on Wednesday 26th October at 7.30 am till 8.30 am.

Club Membership
Tips for Membership Month.
Let’s be perfectly honest. Strong membership is vital for the health of a club, and first impressions are critical. I wonder how many prospective new members slipped through our fingers because we didn’t make sufficient effort to make them feel comfortable.
I read recently of a male who was looking to join Rotary and his strategy was to draw up a list of reasonably local clubs, then find more about them before visiting the main contenders and making a decision.
His list quickly dwindled for a number of reasons which I have illustrated below:
STRATEGY
OUTCOME
1.Internet Search
Many sites were out of date and lacked basic contact information eg email contact.
Content failed to showcase club achievements.
2. Social Media
Few clubs had a SM presence, and those that did had few current posts.
3. Emails to clubs seeking information
Some didn’t respond, some responses were curt and unwelcoming, and one respondent didn’t know when the next meeting was.
4. Booked himself in to attend some  meetings
Reception ranged from very welcoming to plain rude. Once he wasn’t introduced as a guest and few members took the time to engage with him, preferring to talk to their mates.
5. Eventually joined a great club.
Made to feel welcome as soon as he arrived – the clincher, however, was one member made a point of sitting next to him and explaining things during the meeting.

So, the tips to turn visitors into members –
*Keep the website relevant, informative and up to date.
*Create an engaging social media presence.
*Have a friendly and informed member at the end of your club email – one who will make a visitor’s experience really enjoyable from the first contact.
*Find out a little about the visitor, then let club members know in advance where possible.
*Have procedures in place to cater for visitors.
*Encourage members to speak with the visitor by including them in conversations.
ABOVE ALL MAKE THE VISITOR FEEL WELCOME AND IMPORTANT

Rotary Serving Humanity
Rotary Serving Humanity 2016/17 Theme.
Rotary International President, John Germ, believes everyone recognises the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is – not a small opportunity but a great one - an opportunity of a lifetime of change.

Rotary members around the globe are serving humanity providing clean water to under-developed countries, promoting peace in areas of conflict, and strengthening communities through basic education and literacy.

“But no task currently is more important than the work still required to totally eradicate polio,” he said recently. “Last year was an historic one in which the polio virus was stopped in Nigeria and all of Africa. Now there are just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, so we are closer than ever to polio’s total eradication”.

A Teacher's Tale - Operation Flinders 2016.
A Teacher’s Tale of Operation Flinders.
(An excerpt from Simon Klapish’s report in the July Issue of Enjie Community News).
Nine students and two staff from Traralgon College became the second Latrobe Valley team to undertake the challenging, yet rewarding Operation Flinders exercise.
The Team Leader (Brendan) and Assistant Leader (Tavares) formed strong bonds with the participants and both leaders have since visited the LV to present graduation certificates to the team members. As with many of the Operation Flinders volunteers and leaders, there was some military background and skills represented, with Tavares being a former US Infantry soldier who saw service in the second Gulf War. He now enjoys a quieter life in Adelaide. The second LV team, like the first experienced very positive outcomes and self-confidence.
However, this time three young people were identified as having very high levels of leadership potential and were invited to join the Peer Group Mentor training program. Three potential PGMs is unprecedented and showed in the high level of teamwork and outstanding personal determination and character.
When they return to Adelaide, the PGM training will involve navigation exercises, field exercise training, CPR training, Child Safe Environment training, night activities and abseiling, all of which  allows the selected young people to advance towards becoming future leaders.

Aussie No-Hopers:
 Last One:
"When my husband and I arrived at a car dealer to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver's side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. 'Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'it's open !'
His reply, 'I know - I already done that side.'
