I noticed an article in the Herald Sun this week which highlighted a tuck shop menu from April 1982 at Yallambie State School. As we have a daughter who also came into this world in April of the same year, I thought this abridged article was worthy of a trip down memory lane -
Procedure For Ordering Lunches -
Please write your child's name , room number and order on a paper lunch bag, (large enough to contain the entire order). If the money is sent in one bag for more than one lunch please make a note on all of the bags. Remind your child to put their lunch order in the room basket at the start of school. please wrap all money.
The form then listed the options for kids to order including pies and pasties 65 cents (Sauce free!!!), a wide variety of sandwiches (on any type of bread so long as it was white) including ham or ham and pickle or ham, cheese and tomato, alternatively, chicken or chicken and cheese or chicken, cheese and tomato...however you couldn't get salad sandwiches. Cost was either 35 0r 40c and an extra 5 cents for a roll.
But after these offerings, the choices also included, peanut butter, vegemite or jam sandwiches t 25 cents each, and the classic sauce sandwich , a real bargain at just 20 cents. To cater for second course, salt and vinegar chips (25 cents), chickadees or twisties (12 cents) and sonny boys (17 cents). Up market drinks such as chocolate or coffee Big M's or orange juice cost 35 cents.
Editor's footnote - it depends on your age of course, but my preferred Monday lunch was fish and chips - "6 o' chips, 6 o' cakes and a piece of fish!" - all for 2/3d (23 cents). We were allowed to buy our lunch on Mondays because there was no fresh bread I guess due to no Sunday baking.
