Hi everyone!

After many weeks of preparation, another successful Gippsland Rotary Golf Classic was held on Monday 25th March. This is our major fundraiser for the year, which enables us to
continue to support Rotary projects and our local community. As always, a great team effort with Rotarians, family member and friends all pitching in to do whatever needed to be done to help make the day a wonderful event, including the Inner Wheel Club of Moe who help us each year with the serving of dinner. Sincere thanks to everyone who assisted in the lead-up and on the day.

I would also like to thank all the individual players and sponsors as this event couldn’t happen without them. We get so much support from businesses and organisations, from
within our local community and further afield and we are extremely grateful for their ongoing support.
While golf can be a serious business, there is always a lot of fun and laughter on the day, particularly during the post-game meal, competitions and auction. It was great to see everyone having such a good time and we hope to see everyone back again next year!

SAVE THE DATE

It is with great pleasure that we announce the date, time and place for the inaugural D9815 Changeover.

Saturday 29th June, 2024,
at Cardinia Cultural Centre,
40 Lakeside Boulevard, Pakenham
6:30pm for 7pm

This will be a memorable event as it will highlight the accomplishments of both Districts 9810 and 9820 as they join to form District 9815.

It will be a fabulous opportunity to meet and mingle with Rotarians from both Districts as we learn about each other and how we can work together in the coming years.

Booking and cost details will follow shortly. Put the date in your calendar and anticipate an exciting evening where you meet new friends and may hear of different project ideas for your Club.

An update on a Club project.

Robin made a presentation to the RJCA students at Albert Street Primary school about their program which starts in term 2.  Principal Monique Osborn and Welfare Officer Bek Harkensee had already both shown great enthusiasm for President Lyn’s Wheelchair for Kids project and are now supporting the idea of a school “Wheelathon” to raise money for chairs.  Building on this Rtn Robin invited the kids to identify what a chair should look like and then showed them the WFK chair.

He showed a video from a Melbourne school and discussed how a Wheelathon might work. The exciting part is the RJCA kids will be deeply involved in designing and running the day, as part of their RJCA project.   To our knowledge ASPS will be the first school in Gippsland to run a Wheelathon as part of their RJCA program.  It is President Lyn’s wish for this Club project to involve as many of the Club as possible, and there will be scope for the entire club to be there on the day and possibly be part of a BBQ fund raiser.

This Year's Golf Classic - Monday 25 March.

GRGC24 is just around the corner, and is bound to present new challenges, especially in the areas of sponsorship, manpower and our ticketing roster.
However we have seen previously how well the Rotary club of Moe pulls together so we are quietly confident of another successful event.
Ticket Books:
Most Rotarians received their books at our Christmas function, however a couple are still to get theirs.
Hopefully you join us at Monday night's barbecue.
Dave Wood is the undisputed ticket king having already returned the proceeds of 5 sold books. Well done Dave.
Ticket Sales Roster:
This requires your consideration and input on Monday night!!!!
Sale Points - Woolworths, Nextra and K Mart - we have agreed on these sites, and letters seeking permission have been drafted for Nextra and Kmart. (Woolworths is already agreeable.)
Selling Days - are still in dispute.
Last year we had 2 days at Nextra (Wednesday and Thursday) with 2 at Kmart (Saturdays and Sundays.)
Manpower limitations mean that we have opted for just 3 days across 9 weeks from 10.00 am -4.00 pm, commencing Wednesday 24/1 and concluding the weekend before our event.
We are leaning towards Thursday, Friday and Saturdays (with Sundays at best a flexible option). The final decision hinges on your availability on these days.
(Obviously a Saturday at Nextra would be from 9.00 - 1.00.
Options -
1. One week at each of the 3 venues a week about ie Week 1 Nextra, Week 2 Woolworths, Week 3 Kmart and so on.
2. There has been a suggestion that we use a different one of the venues in succession each week eg Thursday at Nextra, Friday at Woolworths, Saturday at Kmart.
The other consideration relates to who is not available on any of those days.
Your thoughts will be welcomed on Monday evening.
Rog.

The  One Percenters. Your perspective on this piece may change based on your actual age……

99% of people born between 1930 and 1946 (GLOBALLY) are now deceased…

If you were born in this time span, your ages range between 77 and 93 years old (a 16-year-age span) and you are one of the rare surviving one-percenters.

You are the smallest group of children born since the early 1900s.

You are the last generation, climbing out of the depression, who can remember the winds of war and the impact of a world at war that rattled the structure of our daily lives for years.

You are the last to remember ration books for everything from tea to sugar to shoes. You saved tin foil and poured fried meat fat into cans.

You can remember milk being delivered to your house early in the morning and placed in the "milk box" at the front door. Discipline was enforced by parents and teachers.

You are the last generation who spent childhood without television and instead, you “imagined” what you heard on the radio. With no TV, you spent your childhood "playing outside". There was no city playground for kids. The lack of television in your early years meant that you had little real understanding of what the world was like. We got “black-and-white” TV in the late 50s that had 3 stations and no remote.

Telephones (if you had one) were one to a house and hung on the wall in the kitchen (who cares about privacy). Computers were called calculators; they were hand-cranked. Typewriters were driven by pounding fingers, throwing the carriage, and changing the ribbon. INTERNET and GOOGLE were words that did not exist.

Newspapers and magazines were written for adults and your dad would give you the comic pages after he read the news. The news was broadcast on your radio in the evening. The radio network gradually expanded from 3 stations to thousands.

New highways would bring jobs and mobility. Most highways were 2 lanes and there were no Motorways. You went downtown to shop. You walked to school.

Your parents were suddenly free from the confines of the depression and the war, and they threw themselves into working hard to make a living for their families.

You weren't neglected, but you weren't today's all-consuming family focus. They were glad you played by yourselves. They were busy discovering the postwar world. You entered a world of overflowing plenty and opportunity; a world where you were welcomed, enjoyed yourselves. You felt secure in your future, although the depression and poverty were deeply remembered.

Polio was still a crippler. Everyone knew someone who had it.

You are the last generation to experience an interlude when there were no threats to our country. World War 2 was over and the cold war, terrorism, global warming, and perpetual economic insecurity had yet to haunt life. Only your generation can remember a time after WW2 when our world was secure and full of bright promise and plenty. You grew up at the best possible time, a time when the world was getting better.

More than 99% of you are retired now, and you should feel privileged to have "lived in the best of times!" If you have already reached the age of 77-years-old, you have outlived 99% of all the other people on this planet. You are a 1% 'er!
