Our land abounds in natures gifts,
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair!"
FOUR WAY TEST
1.
Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

All projects, scholars, and vocational training teams funded by global grants work toward specific goals in one or more of the Foundation’s six areas of focus:

JUNE
ROTARY FELLOWSHIP MONTH

The final month of every Rotary year is Fellowship month

This is a fitting designation since fellowship is particularly to the forefront with changeovers prioritised during June or early July.

We have 5 key Rotary values – service, diversity, integrity, leadership, and fellowship completes the set.

In the modern era, some clubs have tended to shy away from the term “fellowship”, preferring “networking” amongst other titles. Irrespective of what term is used, we acknowledge that Rotarians come together to –

  • Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession

  • Make new friends around the world

  • Explore new opportunities for service

  • Have fun and enhance their Rotary experience and to share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities

Len’s Log 47

This could possibly be called “Len’s Last Log”, but that sounds too ominous at my age. This is the final Log as the President of the Rotary Club of Moe for the 2016-2017 year.

It might sound trite, but it really has been an honour to serve (above self) this year and the support and wonderful camaraderie of the Rotarians in this club is always a highlight.

Special thanks to the hard working Secretary, PE Maureen Bishop.  I am certain that she will be a dynamic and conscientious President in 2017-2018.
The Treasurer, PDG Bryon Puddy, has been indefatigable and his guidance is invaluable to the Club and especially to the President.
The Board and Committee Chairs have all worked hard this year and the Golf Committee, under Chair, Wendy Farmer, did us proud with a record contribution to our fund raising.
The engagement of our club Rotarians has been great. We have farewelled some members and gained one new (Sharon Shaw), there are also a number of potential new members in the wings.

It has been a short year, or so it seems, as the role keeps one busy and engaged.

I know that being a Rotarian has great pluses. The friendship, the fun and above all the service to our community makes the participation a joy, not a chore.

Thanks to all for this year’s adventures. I hope you also enjoyed the journey.

Len

Moe Rotary History
HISTORY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF MOE
1988-89
Year 1988-89 saw Doug Cooney as President with Frank Waterton as Secretary and Jim McAllister as Treasurer. One major feature of the year was the 40th Anniversary Celebration held on the 31st March, 1989. It was organized most meticulously by Club Historian, John Dwyer and attended by a great number of former Rotarians and Rotaryannes. A film featuring the activities of the Rotary Club in the early days was screened. The “Night Out” at Old Gippstown, under the leadership of Peter Newman, was proved most successful with a profit of approximately $21,000 being achieved. However, in his Annual Report, President Doug, expressed concerns about the future of Old Gippstown itself. Work continued on the Botanical Gardens with further trees being planted and paths extended. Club membership stood at 44 with eight inductions during the year to achieve a nett gain of four. A significant social event was a visit by members and their wives from the Rotary Club of Moorabbin who enjoyed the formal and social program organized for them by Fellowship Director, Ben Verschuur.
Vocational Service pioneered an award “The Striving for Success Award” for students entering year 7 at local Secondary Schools, Initial winners were Alana Humphrey, Chris Cordner, Anita Wienserski, Bianca Celilma, Michelle Cahill, Micheal Benbow and Franci Scalia.
The International Service Committee again had a busy year. The Club hosted a visiting Exchange Team from District 108 Cambridgeshire, England, and a most enjoyable time was had by all involved in the hosting. Sadly we lost the “Water Polo Ashes” competed for in Dave and Pam Chapman’s pool. Joanne Passey returned from her exchange in Rena, Norway, and gave a most interesting address to the Club – a fine ambassador for Moe and Rotary. We had the pleasure of hosting Helle Anderson, an Exchange Student from Denmark, who attended Newborough High School. She also proved  to be an excellent ambassador for international goodwill. We continued our involvement with the NZ Exchange, sponsoring Rohan Passey and hosting Nigel Schmidt.
Once again, the Club hosted the Orientation Day for incoming and outgoing NZ Exchange Students at the Yallourn College of TAFE.
Marita Peach and Julie Hayden were nominated for overseas exchange in 1990.
Membership 44. Gained 8. Lost 4.   Attendance 79.77%
How to keep your car safe
With the recent rise in car thefts, RACV’s Royal Auto magazine has provided the following hints for owners and drivers –

PARK WISELY:
If you have off-street parking (even better if it’s behind lockable gates or in a garage) use it.
When out, park in a well-lit area or in secure car parks.

REMOVE TEMPTATION:
Opportunistic thieves will break into a car, usually by smashing a window – if they see something inside that might be valuable
.
So never leave things such as phones, bags, briefcases, wallets, or even sun-glasses in view in an unattended vehicle.
Put portable sat-nav devices out of sight and remember to clean the suction cap mark from the wind-screen to remove evidence
that such a device might be somewhere inside.
Never leave the keys in the ignition when you’re away from the vehicle, even only for a few minutes such as when you’re paying for fuel.

PROTECT YOUR KEYS:
Thieves now target keys to get car. Don’t leave yours lying around your home when you’re out or even at night.
Don’t have an address tag on your keys – mark them with your licence or mobile number instead.

IMMOBILISE YOUR VEHICLE:
Any car sold in Australia from 2001 onwards must be fitted with an Australian Standard-approved engine immobiliser.
Older cars without that protection can be upgraded with an immobiliser fitted by an authorised service centre for as little as $220
A list of fitters can be found at carsafe.com.au
