Robin's Rambles #25

Hi all,
The last Bulletin for this calendar year as Christmas and New year approach.

At our Christmas break up I had chance to thank the Club for their participation and support during
the first 6 months, which I would like to echo for those unable to attend. I’ll let the photos speak for
themselves.

A big thank you.
And well done to the Energy Australia BBQ team of Len, Alan B, Bill, Helen Mac, Lyn and Jamie. A big
effort. Energy Australia sent us a wonderful thank you note and the stats: 365 attendees.
Cooked- 50 vegie burgers, 350 hamburgers, 700 sausages, 8kg sliced onions!

I wish everyone a wonderful and relaxed Christmas and New Year.
When shall we (3) meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain? I hope not, but the date is 16
January 2023 Botanic garden BBQ. See you there.

Len's report on Energy Australia BBQ

The Energy Australia Yallourn BBQ was a great success, with over 200 hungry workers fed between 12 noon and 1 pm. We arrived at the Security office at 9 am and went through the safety training and started our Rotary club trailer BBQ and the mine double BBQ as well. We cooked snags and burgers as well as Veggie Burgers and onions. Brilliant work by Helen MacDonald,
Lyn Cassar, Bill Connell, Alan Bishop, Jamie Hunt, and general Len Cairns.

We finished by 1.30 cleaned up and returned home somewhat exhausted.

After being away on business for a week before Christmas, Tom thought it would be nice to bring his wife a little gift. "How about some perfume?" he asked the cosmetics clerk. She showed him a bottle costing $50.

"That's a bit much," said Tom, so she returned with a smaller bottle for $30.
"That's still quite a bit," Tom groused.

Growing disgusted, the clerk brought out a tiny $15 bottle.
Tom grew agitated, "What I mean," he said, "is I'd like to see something real cheap."

So the clerk handed him a mirror.

Rotary Area of Focus December – Fighting Disease
Rotarians Against Malaria

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) Australia are volunteers who are passionate about eliminating malaria in partner countries. RAM is an Australian registered charity and is part of the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS).  Malaria is a deadly disease that has killed or debilitated people for centuries.  While inroads have been made to reduce the incidence of disease, malaria remains a disease that causes over 400,000 fatalities every year, many of whom are children.  Malaria significantly impacts on the health of over 200 million people each year, with a particularly heavy burden on poorer communities, mostly in Africa and in other tropical regions.

Malaria has almost been eliminated in Timor Leste and Vanuatu is aiming for elimination in the next few years.  However, the disease remains a significant problem in Papua New Guinea, Eastern Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands.

RAM supports projects that aim to control and ultimately eliminate malaria and works with government health programs in partner countries to implement strategies in line with WHO guidelines.  RAM supports projects that work to reduce both the mosquito population and the opportunities for mosquitoes to spread of the malaria parasite.  Projects have included the provision and distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLINs), indoor residual spraying programs and environmental improvements.
