Our land abounds in natures gifts,
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair!"
FOUR WAY TEST
1.
Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Pete's Peregrinations
#21

To be inspirational, as Rotary International Board member, Noel Trevaskis, demonstrated in a recent post, you have to be not only courageous, but resilient. To bounce back to a normal equilibrium from the real or imagined terrors of adversity. It is like talking for the first time in public. Terrifying to start with but invigorating as you and the audience warm to each other. The failure to connect can be just as terrifying.

Brad Graham must be congratulated on his wonderful presentation on his trip to Cambodia and his participation in this year's RYLA camp. He demonstrated great personal courage and growth from his first presentation.

It was inspirational that Moe's Lowana secondary School had reached the final four of the International Sustainability Challenge which will be held in Abu Dhabi early next year. If you have a dollar or two spare dollars to help send the students to the Gulf then Judy Stewart would be only too pleased to hear from you.

And it rained. From here down to Orbost they are crying out for rain. We went to Orbost to represent our club and Inner Wheel a fornight ago at a farmers meeting organised by Orbost Rotary Club. It was grim for the farmers - approximately 70 of them including families. The farmers on the flats had lightened off, but they had irrigation, but the farmers on the hills were squatting on their heels and chewing their piece of bark. Some were down to their last tank of water and not much in the dam's.

Monday is the AGM and Bryon has sent an e-mail with the 2017/18 figures. Please check and get set to approve them. It is Club assembly and our John Flynn Scholar is back.

Stories
Past DG citation presentation to PP Maureen
PP Maureen advised that Past DG Don Ripper and Jude will be attending this week to make a Citation Presentation to the Club
Thoughts from last meeting.
-(Did you catch up with the recent District Bulletin from Secretary Rae, email dated 21 Nov, with our IPP Maureen Bishop and her team  getting acknowledged for her Presidential Citation?)
-Last week, we heard from Bianca , about her role on behalf of Relationships Australia, a non-profit organisation, describe the array of service their organisation provides
-Lowanna College teacher Judith Stewart advised that Lowanna College was one of four finalists in the Global High Schools category for the Zayed Sustainability Prize worth US$100,000. SHe presented a request for funds to support and send a delegate to go to the Annual Awards ceremony, in Abu Dhabi on January 14 2019.  The award celebrates the achievements that are driving impact, innovation and inspiration in Health, Food, Energy, Water and Leadership in Global High Schools. The award would be put to use in the Lowanna Sustainable Futures Project. Contact Judith at the College if you can assist and she can direct you to the best person to contact
- President Peter thanked all those that helped and attended the barbeque celebration at last Wednesdays Junior School Awards presentation.
-Our RYLA nominee Brad Graham described how he was approached by a non-pushy Robin, encouraging him to put himself forward as the nominee and how he nonchalantly accepted  but then there was steep challenging and stimulating learning curve, which in hindsight has brought out the better character in Brad. Brad shared some of his experiences from Cambodia
-And finally,  in RI swindle news, the pool was announced at $243, Ross drew the first ticket and took away $6 and Len drew a 9 card and got nothing
Walhalla train drivers required
THe following was forwarded to me recently, to ask for Volunteer Train Driver training for weekends, from our 'stock' of younger members, seeing as their average member age is close to 70!

Walhalla Goldfields Railway is a not for profit tourism business situated in the foothills of the Baw Baw ranges.

WGR was established in the late 1990’s by a group of train enthusiasts who wanted to restore the railway back to Walhalla on the original track, bringing part of the history of the area back to life.

WGR is always looking for more volunteers to help with all aspects of running and maintaining the train and works areas. WGR needs people to help with maintenance similar to a men’s shed arrangement to maintain the track, spraying weeds, painting, rebuilding track, washing buildings, basically all sorts of small jobs relating to and keeping any building, railway track and diesel engines in good repair.

WGR also needs qualified crew to drive and run trains (3 people per day). WGR runs training days usually once a month for this purpose, WGR supplies all uniform, medicals and a small fuel allowance to all of our active volunteers.

WGR also needs station staff, this involves handling money selling tickets and souvenirs, interacting with customers and waving off the train, again training for this job is also supplied along with all uniform.

The volunteers at WGR are a great bunch of people, all with the community in mind, and like all organisations we need new people to fill spots of those who have left the area or have retired from volunteering.

Our next training days are being held in the Thelma George Training Room at Thomson on – Sun 28th Oct, Sun 04th Nov, and Sun 25th Nov, from 10.00am to 4.00pm

If you are keen to come along please call our office for more information and directions.

*I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes

*Can you cry under water ?

*How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered ?

*Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going ?

*Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity

*What disease did cured ham actually have?

*How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage ?

*Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours ?

*If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing ?

*Why  are you IN a movie, but you’re ON T.V. ?

*Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground ?

*Why is “bra" singular and "panties" plural ?

*Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent  human being would eat ?

*Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane ?

*If  the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can’t he fix a  hole in a boat ?

*If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby  oil made from ?

*If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons ?

*Why do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune ?

*Why did you just try singing the two songs above ?

*Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the  window ?

*Do you ever wonder why you gave me your e-mail address  in the first place?

(Received with thanks, from Ross Maxfield; though I'm beginning to think Ross has taken up on philosophy classes, or perhaps has too much time on his hands)
