Program: Speaker - Scott Grant

All projects, scholars, and vocational training teams funded by global grants work toward specific goals in one or more of the Foundation’s six areas of focus:

JUNE
ROTARY FELLOWSHIP MONTH

The final month of every Rotary year is Fellowship month

This is a fitting designation since fellowship is particularly to the forefront with changeovers prioritised during June or early July.

We have 5 key Rotary values – service, diversity, integrity, leadership, and fellowship completes the set.

In the modern era, some clubs have tended to shy away from the term “fellowship”, preferring “networking” amongst other titles. Irrespective of what term is used, we acknowledge that Rotarians come together to –

  • Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession

  • Make new friends around the world

  • Explore new opportunities for service

  • Have fun and enhance their Rotary experience and to share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities

Len’s Log 47

This could possibly be called “Len’s Last Log”, but that sounds too ominous at my age. This is the final Log as the President of the Rotary Club of Moe for the 2016-2017 year.

It might sound trite, but it really has been an honour to serve (above self) this year and the support and wonderful camaraderie of the Rotarians in this club is always a highlight.

Special thanks to the hard working Secretary, PE Maureen Bishop.  I am certain that she will be a dynamic and conscientious President in 2017-2018.
The Treasurer, PDG Bryon Puddy, has been indefatigable and his guidance is invaluable to the Club and especially to the President.
The Board and Committee Chairs have all worked hard this year and the Golf Committee, under Chair, Wendy Farmer, did us proud with a record contribution to our fund raising.
The engagement of our club Rotarians has been great. We have farewelled some members and gained one new (Sharon Shaw), there are also a number of potential new members in the wings.

It has been a short year, or so it seems, as the role keeps one busy and engaged.

I know that being a Rotarian has great pluses. The friendship, the fun and above all the service to our community makes the participation a joy, not a chore.

Thanks to all for this year’s adventures. I hope you also enjoyed the journey.

Len

Stories
The Origins of ROMAC
ROMAC- (Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children)

ROMAC is perhaps best known to us by the adhesive stickers attached members’ badges, indicating our personal financial support for this program.
But how much do we really know about ROMAC?

ROMAC was started in 1987 by Kangaroo Flat Rotarian Barrie Cooper and his wife Clarabelle, a nurse. During a visit to Fiji they became aware of the need to assist children there who had major medical issues that could not be handled in Fiji at the time.

The first case was to assist a little girl who had been severely burned in a kerosene fire, and her neck had been vulcanised to her chest, and her arms to her sides. The Coopers set up medical assistance with the support of plastic surgeon Dr. Murray Stapleton. She lived in Australia with the family during her numerous surgeries and made a complete recovery.

Eight years later Max Walker was the keynote speaker at Sydney’s District 9880 Conference, and spoke of the challenge of assisting with medical aid in third world countries. At the end of his speech, alittle voice came from off stage saying, "What about me Mr. Walker?" Then that same young girl from Fiji in 1987, little Jesse Ryder, joined him on the stage, leaving the entire auditorium in tears.

This virtually became the launch of ROMAC, spreading from Bendigo to districts in Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand.

Footnote: As ROMAC’s National Patron, Max Walker spoke on behalf of the project on 110 occasions at no cost. His untimely death last year was a huge loss for everyone in the Rotary family.

Moe Rotary History
HISTORY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF MOE
Year 1977-78
Frank Paynter was President. There was, however, quite a contemporary look about the other Board Members with Ross Maxfield as Secretary, David Power as Vice President, Chas Witts as Vocational Service Chairman and Julian Yeatman as International Service Chairman. There was also a reference in the Club Service Report that Sgt. at Arms, Clive O’Donnell, “kept members on their toes”.
In his Annual Report, President Frank wrote “We were fortunate in having a Japanese Student Masato Odaka, with us for twelve months and my thanks go to the six hosts and Rotaryannes for the warmth and generosity of their hospitality extended to Masato. During the year the parents of Masato were here for one week hosted by Rotarians. The warmth and friendliness radiated by this visit was a perfect example of International Fellowship and Understanding and was an outstanding success”. Eleven Rotarians and wives attended the District Conference at Albury. In the Community Service area, Chas Robertson was able to report on considerable progress being made with the Gatehouse Gardens Project. A large quantity of topsoil was spread, a lawn sown and approximately 120 trees and shrubs planted. The second “Night Out” was held at Old Gippstown making a profit of $2,700. The Club donated $3,000 to local charities with the largest donation of $2,400 going to the Latrobe Valley Geriatric Hospital.
Vocational Service distributed Self Analysis Sheets to all Rotarians and, in an effort to improve productivity in the community, a Combined Service Clubs Meeting of all Service Clubs in the City of Moe was organized in Shaw’s Ballroom. This was addressed by an excellent speaker from the Productivity Council of Australia.
International Service had an active year being involved with both full year Student Exchange and New Zealand Exchange. The Club Foundation percentage was raised to 900% while two candidates were nominated for Educational Awards – unfortunately they later withdrew. FAIM was well supported and a FAIM team from Warragul addressed the Club during World Understanding Week. A World Community Service Project was selected from the IPAC list, and an Electric Welder to the value of $250 was purchased for the Togiata House, Goroka, Papua New Guinea – run by the Salvation Army – to provide vocational training courses for boys sentenced by the courts. The funds were raised at a Progressive Dinner and an Austerity Meal. Membership – 41 Lost 8. Attendance 85.35%.

Dying With Dignity
(An announcement from a retiree)

"I have already informed my family that I will not be able to afford an expensive
nursing home which would allow me to die poor and very old.  I have therefore moved to Ecuador so that I can spend my final years enjoying life, and dying with Dignity!"

Footnote: A postcard was attached, and I can inform readers that Dignity is a rather young and gorgeous local lass.
