Len’s Log 37
While it is a while before Changeover, we should be thinking and talking with PE Maureen Bishop and all who are taking on positions as Board members and Committee Chairs should consider going to the District Congress at Churchill soon.
Last week we had a presentation from Keryn Vaughn, who reported on her attempt to send Laptop computers to African school and the issues that arose and then Keryn turned to what she and her helpers have been achieving in other projects.
Keryn’s enthusiasm and dedication are so evident and the new projects she has embarked upon are very worthy works.
Committees should have met last week and if they did not then please arrange a meeting so that we have full reports for the Board and Club Assembly after that.
Easter is coming and we do not meet on Easter Monday. If you are having a holiday over Easter, I hope it is enjoyable and safe.

We believe that maternal and child health is not only an important area of focus, but the most important of the six areas of focus. Women in the twentieth century have achieved significant progress in the economically progressive areas of the world. Meanwhile, women and girls in non-developed countries have a much more difficult life, especially in comparison to their male counterparts. Many of these women and girls accept their inferior social status and tend to fall into traditional roles.
Economic depression often times forces extended families to live together under one roof, leaving young women who desire to make even the smallest change in their lives to fall under the subordinate customs and values of their parents and their grandparents. In addition, many non-developed countries still commonly marry off underage girls, many of who are under the age of thirteen but the vast majority being under the age of 18. This not only impacts their opportunity for an education, but has a profound effect on the number of pregnancy-related complications that occur for girls who are not physiologically ready to bare children. To combat this, we must address family planning to reduce 30% of maternal deaths which will ultimately empower women and achieve a demographic dividend for developing countries.

Please send me your photos from this year's Rotary activities as they are an essential part of the Annual Report preparations. Although the Changeover isn't until the end of June, planning has already commenced. So email appropriate photos to mwaddell@live.com.au, or inform her of what you can contribute if having difficulties attaching photos to your email.
The Club was led by David Richards with Ross Maxfield as Secretary. David was able to report many significant achievements for the year. These include the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Past District Governor Allan McHardy , the Club’s first Paul Harris Fellow. The BBQ at Old Gippstown raised $2,700 for disbursement to the Community. The Club completed its commitment of $5,500 to the Latrobe Valley Geriatric Hospital with a donation of $2,600 in 1978-79. Finishing touches were put to the Gatehouse Gardens Project with the laying of water pipe and the laying out of garden beds.
A high point of the year was the Dinner held on the 2nd April to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Moe. The Club also presented a Dinner Gong and Gavel to the newly formed Rotary Club of Hazelwood.
On the International front, the Club hosted its second full year Exchange Student, South African, Karen Simpson. International Chairman, Val McGolderick , represented the Club on a FAIM team to the village of Kevasaka in the Eastern Highlands of New Guinea completing a project which involved building a Hospital and two Staff Houses. Val was able to visit Togiata House to which the Rotary Club of Moe had donated a Welder the previous year.
In the Vocational area, a team of speakers visited Moe Secondary Schools to speak on the requirements of an employer. A bus trip to Rawson and the Thompson Dam proved successful for Club Members.
