We are aware that during the month of May, Kishor with assistance from Ross, promote men's health through Rotary's Bowel Scan program. (Talk to either Rotarian if you require a kit for yourself or a friend!) Perhaps you are not quite as aware our work in the area of prostate cancer. In 1994, television personality Roger Clemson, a member of the Rotary Club of Lane Cove, was diagnosed with prostate cancer and confronted firsthand with the dire lack of information and support available to tens of thousands of Australian men affected by the disease. Following his successful treatment, Roger persuaded his club to join him in forming what would become the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) to address this issue and raise funds for research. Now, as well as funding world-leading, innovative research into prostate cancer , the PCFA further supports men and their families through evidence-based information and resources , support groups and prostate cancer specialist nurses. Because of Rotary, enormous progress has been made improving the length and quality of life of men living with the disease. However there is still a great amount of work to be done. Prostate cancer kills even more men than breast cancer kills women, yet has relatively low research funding. Awareness of the disease, which causes the deaths of over 3000 Australian men a year, is also lacking among the broader community. All the more reason to support and attend The Big Blokes BBQ later this month - another awareness and fund-raising program for prostate cancer. |
