What great turnout for our first normal meeting of year 2023. We also has 3 guests from the Latrobe
Valley Beekeepers Association, Sean Paul Smith, Marcus Wieloch and Noel Lees.
Di Wilkinson led us to acknowledge the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. It was very interesting. Unfortunately her promised 90 seconds of explanation overran, so she was appropriately fined for “rabbiting on”.
Barry Dunstan gave an update on progress with the BBQ shelter. An amazing effort and the budget is
still under control.
Roger spoke to the upcoming Golf Day. He is open to help an input from members. In the meantime he is looking for members to support the Raffle ticket selling roster.
Thanks to all those already signed on. My request is would everyone please take a slot – it eases the
load on those who are already rostered and also running around the town looking for sponsors and
teams.
Our guest speaker Sean Paul Smith was introduced by Bill Connell. Sean is President of the Latrobe
Valley Beekeepers Association. They have an ambitious project to create a Moe Connection Community Park on the old Moe Netball Courts on Saviges Road. With an established pollinator garden and plans for raised beds this sounded an exciting development. Sean hopes to have the first MOE EARTH Market on 1st April, starting a regular event which will he hopes will become a
destination event. The support of the 250 Beekeeper Association members is sure to draw further interest.
As the meeting drew to a close Barry Dunstan presented his tribute to a great Australian Doctor,
Sir (Ernest) Edward “Weary” Dunlop, whose endeavours during internment in the Japanese prison camps saved countless Australian service men and women’s lives. His efforts after the war on behalf of former prisoners of the Japanese won him great respect and loyalty.
I note that Sue Bechaz is organising a Moe Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal fund raiser,
by way of a wine and dine event on Sat Feb 18. See page 14 of LV Express for more info.
