As I looked out the kitchen window this morning, a lyric popped into my head..."Rainy days and Mondays, always get me down". It isn't Monday but it is still raining!
The news broadcast provided updated information and scenes of areas I know well in Traralgon. The impact of heavy rains over the last few days is devastating. I do hope our Rotary friends and members of that community are well-supported and safe. It is disastrous for East Gippslanders who have been dealt harsh blows over the last 18 months. Firstly bushfires, then economic disruption due to pandemic lockdowns, and now calamitous floods. I think there may have been a mouse plague as well!
I am sure District 9820 will organise an appeal for donations to the Disaster Relief Account to support flood victims in Latrobe Valley, Central Gippsland and East Gippsland. When that happens, I will seek support from the Board and members to consider making a financial contribution. There may be other ways we can help too.
It was disappointing that the Vocational Excellence Awards had to be deferred but that is the way it is at the moment. No venue, no presentation!
Thank you to those Rotarians who logged-on for our Zoom meeting on Monday night. It was fascinating to learn of the many different jobs Moe Rotarians have had and how those experiences have influenced their career paths. In our club, a member has been a messenger boy at the Daily Mirror; a photographer's assistant; a kitchen hand in a busy local hospital in Leicester City; a local postie; a paper boy; a factory worker in China; an Army reservist; shop assistants - one in a fish'n'chip shop, the other at Burton Stores in Warragul; a Coles check-out chick; and a mechanic at Ashwood Motors. It was a great social online gathering and many thanks to Len Cairns who moderated the meeting.
We have another Zoom meeting scheduled for Monday as restrictions on numbers allowed to gather socially are still in place. The meeting will include the segment, "At the Podium" and Len Cairns has volunteered to be our guest speaker and will offer his insights on "Life Post-Retirement". The meeting will start at 6.30pm and I will organise Zoom invitations. The link will be sent on Sunday evening. If you have any issues with logging in, please phone me.
Secretary Maureen Bishop and I are still planning a face-to-face Changeover meeting at the Moe RSL Club on Monday 28 June but we are awaiting confirmation from the venue. We are hoping restrictions will be eased further so Changeover can go ahead.
Lastly, best wishes to Rotarians who are recovering from operations. You have been in our thoughts and we wish you all a speedy recovery. To those Rotarians travelling in the west, stay safe on the roads. Robin Noakes joined our Zoom meeting on Monday and he and Kate are well and have been in contact with Bruce Paull. Bruce has experienced a few calamities but all is well apparently. Everyone, please stay safe and I look forward to meeting you online on Monday.
