FOCUS: What will our club do to develop membership?
Len’s Log 4
Last week we had a great presentation by Mark Themann, Director of the Latrobe Regional Gallery. The programmes planned over the next months in the Morwell located Gallery as outlined by Mark sounded exciting, with both International and local artist and different media being exhibited. We are very lucky as a community to have such a facility in our midst.
We also found out that we have been successful in our District Grant application for out summer Marigolds Project. In association with this we also had a look at a prototype wheelbarrow at our Board Meeting and we are suggesting to our “builders” at the RRR Emporium, some modifications for the flower displays we are preparing involving these wheelbarrows.
The Board has also had a serious discussion about our costs incurred for Rotary International, District 9820 and Rotary Down Under Magazine, all compulsory subscriptions, and how we can possibly ensure we are financially viable and responsible in our Membership subs and other elements. I will be presenting the information for a club discussion on Monday next, so the Board can have some ideas from the Rotarians across the club before a decision is made for this Rotary year.
We need a good attendance this week for these ideas to be well represented.
It was pleasing to have Trent Euman, accompanied by father, Jason, attend our last dinner meeting.
Trent was confident that he would promote this Rotary youth leadership activity to his fellow Year 9 students, because he got so much out of his experience.
Like most youngsters his age, he thoroughly enjoyed the rock-climbing and the flying fox, but he also loved participating in the key project work on bullying at school.
He stressed that the guest speaker was a major highlight - from his presentation he learnt that it is okay to make mistakes, and also learnt how to overcome adversity.
He now has to make a presentation to classmates back at school, and no doubt he will mention how he gained a new perspective on disability after playing wheelchair basketball.
Other news:
It was pleasing to receive the Rotary banner from our good mate, and Moe Rotarian, Neil McCluskey which President Michael presented to the club. Best wishes to you Neil and keep up the Rotary connection while you are overseas.
Robin Noakes is the club's new Protection Officer and he is keen for all Working With Children cardholders to update their information on the new Form 3.
There are simple instructions how you can download the form in his report in this bulletin.
Rotary Fellowships Month -
June is designated as “Rotary Fellowships Month” by the RI Board to recognize the importance of international fellowship and good will among Rotarians with similar recreational interests, vocations, and health and medical issue-oriented interests, to promote increased participation in fellowships and increase understanding of this program. The RI Board encourages fellowships groups to highlight activities through projects, activities, and events in celebration of “Rotary Fellowships Month” in June.
“Fellowship is wonderful; it illuminates life’s pathway, spreads good cheer, and is worth high price.”
I discovered some interesting forecasts of technology advancements over the next couple decades and their impact on the way we might live and work??
In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide.
Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt.
What happened to Kodak will, according to experts, happen in a lot of industries in the next 10 years - and most people don't see it coming.
Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you would never take pictures on film again?
Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law.
So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a long time, before it became way superior and got mainstream in only a few short years.
It will now happen with Artificial Intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs.
Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Welcome to the Exponential Age.
Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years...
Uber is just a software tool, they don't own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world.
Airbnb, Worldwide Accommodations Leader, is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don't own any properties.
Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk. The question was worth 70 points or none at all.
One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote:
1) It is perfect formula for the child.
2) It provides immunity against several diseases.
3) It is always the right temperature.
4) It is inexpensive.
5) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa.
6) It is always available as needed.
And then the student was stuck.
Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote:
7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it.
