Pete's Peregrinations at The Multi District Conference
#28

Back home, trying to compress 2.5 days into a few paragraphs.

Should I take Past Rotary International President, Ian Riseley's suggestion, and use only 2 words to describe each speaker. At some point it becomes nonsensical, and repetitive. So here are my highlights, and more will appear over the next few weeks.

Friday was a full day with the over all standard extremely high at the Rotary Peace Conference.

Stories
Two PHF announced
As part of tonights Rotary Foundation presentation, Rog announced two Club members had been awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award, to Robin Noakes and Helen Morrison.

"This person has been in Rotary for the past 5 years, and at all times brings to the club integrity, honour, professionalism and reliability. I may further add that he is highly regarded by his peers, is known to be both a meticulous planner and always follows a project through from beginning to end.", Rog said of Robin, “Robin thoroughly enjoys working with and challenging young people, spends considerable hours assisting students through quality Rotary programs such as the Rotary Junior Community Award, RYPEN, Pride of Workmanship. In fact, directly attributable to the Rotary Club of Moe’s latest Paul Harris Fellow, Robin Noakes. Robin has been an outstanding leader with particular capabilities in assisting young people"

"There is no doubt that Rotary has provided opportunities for personal growth for so many of us, and this is certainly the case here.

Our recipient, amongst other things, has been very prominent in supporting her husband’s passion for scouting, and to that end, she has been Head of Fund-raising, until very recently, for the local scouting movement. Through her diligence, persistence and planning, she has raised in excess of $10,000 each year through scout auctions (selling items, not scouts), scout raffles at bonfire night and chocolate sales.

Here at Moe Rotary Club we recognise her leadership as Vocational Service Chair, Sergeant, and now her willingness, with the anticipated support of everyone here, to lead our club next year as President. Please acknowledge Paul Harris recipient, Rotarian Helen Morrison.

RJCA  barbeque

Wednesday 14th November saw the Rotary Junior Community Award presentation to 25 Grade 6 students, from 4 schools, at Elizabeth St Primary School. Big thanks to Ross and his team for their very timely barbeque. They had food ready just as everyone rolled up. No one went hungry.

President Pete presented the Certificates, Robin, and Maureen acknowledged special aspects from each student and Helen kept the flow of certificates and diaries moving. The general conclusion from students and parents was that it was a good evening with many very proud group photographs being taken. Prospects for next year look strong with Elizabeth St ordering 18 diaries, and Albert St running an application process right now.

Bunatan No 3 School
International Chair Committee Len reported back to the Club, on behalf of the annual Bali trip members, of the state of our adopted project school near Ahmed in Bali. The recent earthquake by volcano Mount Agung had damaged many of the locally made roof tiles such that any rain, which is highly likely as it is the monsoon season, will surely just make matters worse by inundating the left over classrooms and cause more ceiling plaster collapsing.

Discussions with the Principal showed varying levels of disturbance to the building. Currently, most of the schooling is done in make shift tents in the courtyard as the integrity  of the ceiling, tiles and roof structure is deemed unsafe. Local government has sufficient funds to only carry out urgent maintenance repairs to make safe but not totally render habitable classroom space. In liaising with our local CLub builder, an estimate of AUD5700 has been put forward to make good the roof tiling, ahead of  official repairs by the government. The International Committee will discuss ways to revenue raise this fund so as to afford immediate assistance to the school.

The flush mechanism in the boys toilets was also replaced, as it was ripped off its location.

At the end of the day, all the teachers, parents and kids want is somewhere decent to be taught reading and writing, and they do so knowing that the regular and annual visit by the proud Rotarians of Moe are doing their little bit by helping by bring a smile to their faces.
NOVEMBER RF  4

November is Rotary Foundation Month.

During this month, each bulletin edition will have an article about how your Rotary Foundation (RF) money is spent to assist with humanitarian projects world-wide. It’s important to note that 91% 0f funds contributed to RF are spent directly on projects.

Supporting Education: More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17% of the world’s adult population. Rotary helps to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, and to reduce gender disparity. We do it by taking action to empower educators to inspire learning at all ages, through…

  • teacher training
  • adult literacy programs
  • educating refugees
  • coaching teachers
  • mentoring students
  • schools 4 freedom (action group against slavery)

“When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community one by one

(This was the last in this series from Rog Taylor, on the Rotary Foundation)

Thoughts from last meeting.
-Tonight, we welcomed last weeks guest presenter, Sean Paul Smith, who is charged to look after the local Botanic Gardens on behalf of Latrobe City and also on behalf of a thriving Mens Shed in Newborough, with some 75 members on the books. A lot of new trees have been planted with cooperation from local primary and secondary schools. He discussed some ideas in beautifying the area, by using grant funds available for those projects that made a noise (!), like a  forgotten but dug up proposal for a Chinese Garden theme. He advocated strongly to push local area marketing of the national parks eg Tarra Bulga, and the annual sister city day in Morwell. Past President Maureen and other members expressed concern that as Rotarians, we already have a strong connection with the Botanic Garden, and have a Rail Trail Park themed idea sitting at Council with no further financial commitment or otherwise, to date. As a service Club trying to make a difference to the community, we dont want our project to be missed out. Sean encouraged Rotary to join him and use him as a platform to Council, to voice our concerns and to work together in achieving both activities

-Michael Koch circulated pictures and reported on the completion of the Bali school roof project, ever since the recent earthquake left roof tiles in a very perilous state of  damage. He has had promises of funds of $4500, and so Moe Rotary will not need to be asked to chip in too much
-Rog Taylor, Golf Committee Chair, has started to receive applications for teams for the Golf Day.  ANd Helen advised that despite extremes of weather (searing hot one day to icy 'cold' the next!), many members have helped sell the Golf Day raffle tickets at Kmart and Woolworths.
-ANd in Swindle news, treasurer Bryan advised that the pot has swelled to $412 but didnt go off when both Maureen and John both drew picture cards, and so the prize grows bigger next week
