FOUNDATION OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF MOE
The Rotary Club of Moe received its Charter on the 1st of April 1949. The events leading to the foundation of the Rotary Club of Moe are described by Charter President Mel Wyett in the 1st Annual Report of the Club.
"A Rotary Club was needed in Moe and Jack Murnane of Warragul invited me to be his guest at an Inter Club Meeting at Traralgon about September 1948 where I was asked by Len Trigg and Jack Murname if I would be prepared to organise a Rotary Club in Moe.
This I was very willing to do, and, a few days later at Purvis' Staff Ball in Traralgon, Len Trigg, Tom Holt, Herb Beck and myself held an Informal Meeting and it was decided to go ahead with the forming of a club. A number of residents were spoken to and 23 decided to ask Len Trigg to meet us at the Soldiers' Club Rooms on the 8th of November, 1948 where a decision was reached to ask Morwell to Sponsor a Club in Moe.
Of the original 23, two found it impossible to carry on and withdrew from the number. Our respected member and elected Treasurer, H. Kendall, died prior to the Induction Meeting, leaving 20 members to comprise the total which was duly inducted as the Provisional Rotary Club of Moe on the 6th December, 1948 by District Governor, Eric Cuthbertson and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Morwell at which Jack Lawless being President, presided.
The Induction took place in the Fire Brigade Hall. Our Charter was granted on the 30th of December, 1948 is numbered 7145 and was presented in due form at our Charter night on the 1st of April, 1949. The Charter of the Rotary Club of Moe was presented by District Governor, J. Eric Cuthbertson, on 1st of October, 1949. Over 200 Rotarians and guests attended.
