Bali Visit 2016
(President Len is currently in Bali, working with our Rotary team on the "Adopt a School Bali Project")
Our aim for this project since 2009, has been to provide on-going help to the Indonesian village primary school of Banyuning in the District of Abang.
Located on the north-east coast of the island of Bali, the area is renowned for its harsh climate, lack of water and extreme poverty. The school's official title is School No.3, Bunatan Banyuning, and although we always have a little difficulty communicating with the students, our message is clear, and the infectious smiles of the young students is heart-warming.
From the earliest visits, the visiting Rotarians have always had a specific goal in mind, so that our time spent in the school community is beneficial. Initially we provided gifts of books and stationery. After that first contact we were able to focus on specific needs of the community, so our role evolved into one which supported maintenance and hygiene projects. The focus this trip is on improving the quality of life of one of the young female students, through medical assistance.
It is worth reflecting on one of the early visits, where it was noticed that students who attended the morning school session were often replaced by their siblings in the afternoon. We established that this was due to the family only possessing one school uniform, and as it was compulsory to wear a uniform, it became a shared item. it was from this observation that our club decided to provide all students with a uniform supplied by Moe Rotary.
With each visit comes new stories and a new objective.
What will be our focus for the 2017 visit to this impoverished fishing community?
