MUNA 2017
Posted by Di Harrison
MUNA is happening from 5 May to 7 May at Phillip Island.
I will head down Friday lunchtime to help set-up.
First time there, so things will be a little different.
The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) encourages young people to actively learn about other nations and to understand and appreciate the workings of the United Nations. Delegates (students) represent countries and engage in debating resolutions aimed at achieving world peace, improving health standards, addressing inequality and promoting intercultural understandings.
Participants are mostly year 11 students, who are sponsored by local Rotary clubs across District 9820. The benefits are many and students have an opportunity to develop skills such public speaking, debating and leadership. They are actively encouraged to join in the 'spirit of MUNA' and wear their country's national costume, follow Assembly protocols and procedures and to enjoy the experience of making presentations to the Assembly on behalf of their country.
This is my fifth year on the District committee and I will be spending the weekend adjudicating. It is wonderful to see the personal growth of students from the moment they arrive on Friday afternoon not really knowing anyone through to the Sunday afternoon when firm friendships have been made. Through connecting via MUNA, these young people discover that Rotary offers much more and that it is a humanitarian-based service organisation focused on making the world a better place.
